Bernese News 20th April 2015

The Bernese entry for Birmingham National Championship Show 2015
has been announced
as 79 exhibits giving 85 entries for breed specialist judge Janet Riseborough (Moonbach).

For comparison the entry at the 2014 show was 63 entries with 20 absentees for breed specialist
judge Marian Scott (Scobern).

At the Working & Pastoral Breeds of Wales Championship Show 2015 all-rounder judge
Jeff Luscott had 82 entries with 14 absentees across 13 classes.

It was a 4th CC plus Best of Breed for Bernice Mair, Carole Hartley-Mair & Gary Dybdall's
recently crowned, homebred Meadowpark Vertigo JW who is 19 months old and sired by
Ch Jaybiem Utwo JW ShCM x Meadowpark Sugar's Diva. The same owners also took the
Reserve Bitch CC with Meadowpark Breezing On, a 15 month bitch out of Ch Meadowpark
Whispers Breeze and sired by the Reserve Dog CC winner, Tjofselinas Z Diamuz At Fortonpark.
A Swedish import owned by Julie Baldwin, he is 2 1/2 years old, bred by Lotta Schander and
sired by Maroussia Zante Zhivago x Kronblommas Jolanta.

In bitches, winning the veteran class and her 2nd CC was Steve, Jeannette and Emily Green's
homebred 7 year old Waldershelf Happy Hattie.  7 years old, she is sired by Ch Bernolynn It's
Beano Surprise x Quarts De Chaume Van't Rijkenspark At Waldershelf.    Hattie was also placed
3rd in an entry of 16 with 8 absentees in the Working Veteran Stakes and the same owners'
Waldershelf Here Comes Erik won the Working Dog Puppy Stakes in an entry of 14.  The judge of
those Stakes classes was Mr K Andrew.

Best Puppy in Breed went to Shandy Bridges' homebred Kernow All My Loving. 8 months old she
is a daughter of Ch Shirdees Love Me Do At Cullumbern JW ShCM x Kernow Uptou.
Congratulations.

The BMD Club of Great Britain have published an announcement
(reproduced below)
regarding Degenerative Myelopathy (DM).

Jackie Green has also informed me that there are 5 single SOD1B tests available for those
who may already have tested their dog(s) for SOD1A.

POLICY AND ACTIONS FOR DM TESTING

PERTINENT BACKGROUND POINTS

DM is a debilitating, distressing and eventually fatal disease in the sense of necessitating
euthanasia. It affects the nerves controlling the rear end of the dog causing gradual, and
ultimately complete, loss of function.

It predominantly, but not exclusively, affects older dogs and because of this some feel it is not
a big problem for Bernese Mountain dogs.

In other countries, particularly the USA, ‘newly’ available genetic testing has established that
DM is widespread though the breed’s gene pool in that country. There are two genetic
mutations implicated in DM occurring in Bernese Mountain Dogs. The general one that applies
to many breeds and second one, SOD1B, that so far, has only been found in Bernese.
Please see ‘Genetics of DM in BMD’ article in club magazine December 2014 or on club web site
www.bernese.co.uk      for more details.

The test for both consists of a cheek/mouth swab and this will be analysed and one of three
gradings assigned to it. The statistics and details are slightly different for each test but essentially
the principles are the same and can be summarised as follows.

‘At Risk’, - Higher probability, but not certainty, of developing the disease. Will pass the faulty
genes on to all offspring. Both parents must have been at least carriers and one or both could
have been at risk, neither will be clear.

‘Carrier’ – extremely unlikely to be affected but, on average, will pass the disease genes on to
50% of offspring. Parents must have contained at least one Carrier.

‘Clear’ - not carrying the faulty gene at all. Will not pass the gene on. Both parents could be clear
but if one parent could have been a carrier the other must have been clear.

Despite it predominantly affecting older dogs, which is still not acceptable to most people, it is
not safe to assume that this will always be the case if the situation is ignored. If stronger genetic
influence is allowed to develop unchecked then it is not unreasonable to summise that younger
dogs will eventually be affected.

Breeders in many countries are beginning to recognise and tackle this problem by using the genetic
test and incorporating the results in breeding choices. In countries where such things are possible
breed clubs are beginning to incorporate use of this testing into club health policies.

Some breeders and owners are beginning to do likewise in the UK and concerns have been
publicised in club publications. There are lots of anecdotal opinions on how widespread the
condition is in the UK, some presume it is widespread others feel it is rare. No one can argue with
any authority or validated information.

CONSIDERATIONS and AIMS

In discussion the committee wished to address the above issues so it was agreed to use a portion
of money from the health fund to give a ‘kick start’ to DM testing in the UK and promote awareness.

The aim of this would be to establish a validated impression of the presence of DM within the British population. At the end of the first year it is hoped to have results from around 75 dogs.

It is not to be a condition of this testing that owners publicise the results. Only summary data will
be provided to the club by the testing company, Gensol. THIS WILL CONTAIN NO INDIVIDUAL
INFORMATION which will only be sent to the owner of the dog. There will not even be an official
list of which dogs have been tested. From the club’s perspective this is totally about the overall
picture. For the individual owners the results will be meaningful for them.

This summary data can then be publicised, assessed and further actions considered.

Summary of Aims of Initiative

1 - To establish a validated datum picture of the extent of DM within the UK population of Bernese

2 - To help raise awareness and engagement with the issue amongst the Bernese community

3 - To begin to promote some use of DM results in breeding decisions.

THE PROCESS

Subject to the following restrictions a limited amount of genetic testing for the DM standard
(SOD1A) and SOD1B variants will be offered free to club members. This consists of mouth
swabs taken at certain events.

This will be limited to no more than three dogs bred or owned by the same person(s) on a
completely voluntary first come first served basis on the day at the event.  This will also be limited
to dogs that have already been hip and elbow scored. It will be possible to book places in advance,
please contact Jackie Green on 024 7654 1617 or email DM@bernese.co.uk

Approximately 25 tests will be available at three club events during 2015.
These will be the two Open shows, at Grenoside and Wantage and the Spring Garden Party.
The swab kits completed at each of these events will be submitted by the club in a single batch.

At the end of the year, the club will be able to publish the overall summary results of the testing
and the breed in the UK can consider the next move, if any, based upon these results.

It should be stressed that this initiative does not involve any specific recommendations for
breeding practices between the three resultant categories At Risk, Carrier or Clear. It is common
sense though to at least avoid doubling up on the worse categories. In the USA the philosophy
is “no more At Risk puppies’. Put simply this means just by ensuring each mating has at least one
clear rated dog, we would never produce an ‘at risk’ dog and no Bernese would ever suffer from
this disease.

(Initiated at committee meeting of 21st February 2015)
