At WELKS exhibitors were met with a very wet and muddy venue so judging was held inside. Breed specialist judge Janet Riseborough (Moonbach) had attracted 94 entries with 23 absentees across 20 classes.

Carole Hartley-Mair and Gary Dybdall's Ch Meadowpark High Class continued his run of wins by collecting his 37th CC plus Best of Breed. Carole also took Best Puppy with 'Milo's' daughter Meadowpark Touch Of Class (x Ch Meadowpark Breezing On).

Sandy Rothery's Glamrock Graffiti Artist ShCM won the Reserve Dog CC. He is homebred, rising 4 years old and sired by Ch Jaybiem Utwo JW ShCM x Glamrock Midnight Raver.

In bitches it was a 10th CC for Di and Mike Atherton's homebred Ch Athersbern Peronelle Blush. Just short of 6 years old she is a daughter of Ch Monalou Dutch Courage x Athersbern Affinity.

The Reserve Bitch ticket was awarded to Michele Gurneys homebred Ch Monalou Fanny Craddock JW who is a 6 1/2 year old sired by Ch Bernerdalens Uno Amigo Bueno x Ch Monalou Perfect Recipe. Congratulations.

George Wilson, Chairman of the BMD Club of Scotland tells me that schedules have been posted to all Club members for their Kelso Championship Weekend which takes place on 4th and 5th August.

At least year's Championship show the entry fee for members was just £5 and that proved so popular that the Club is offering the same low entry fee for members at this year's Championship Show too.

All details are now on the Club website at http://www.bmdcos.btck.co.uk/KelsoWeekend2018 or further enquiries to Club secretary Agnes Wilson Tel; 01698 860298 Email ursinebmd@sky.com

CRYSTAL PALACE CANINE SOCIETY OPEN SHOW 8th April 2017

Puppy  (1 entry)
1st Rumble’s Harvestbank In Dreams Of Glenbrienz.
An 11 month old handsome dog puppy of good size and body proportions with good bone and substance for age. Pleasing head of good proportions with dark almond shaped eyes and a kind expression. Correct length of neck leading onto good shoulders. Straight front legs but would prefer a touch more length to his upper arm. Well ribbed with short loin, well angulated rear with good bend of stifle and strong hocks. Topline slightly higher over his rump at the moment but this should level with maturity. Classically marked, thick coat and he was beautifully handled and presented. Lovely, happy temperament and he was clearly enjoying his day. Moved well behind and in profile but unfortunately moved wide in front today. Considered this lovely young man for Reserve Best of Breed today but unfortunately his movement let him down. I will watch his future with interest.

Junior  (1)
1st Hellingsworth’s Alisonobern Anna At Carabaz.
A 16 month old pretty, young bitch. Feminine head with flashy markings, good stop and flat skull. The darkest of eyes which gave her a lovely expression but were a touch round. Well angulated front and back. Good body proportions and a beautiful, straight topline which she held whilst standing and on the move. Good tail length and set and carried correctly. Beautifully presented. Good front and profile movement but she moved a little close behind today.

Post Graduate  (3 entries,1 absentee)
1st King & Bramble’s Shirdees Miss Congeniality JW.
A 22 month old feminine bitch who is maturing nicely with good bone and size. Beautiful head with classic markings and dark, almond shaped eyes. Good length of neck onto well angulated front quarters. Slightly stretched body proportions due to her length of loin. Nice rear with good bend of stifle and well let down hocks. When stood her topline dipped over her shoulders but on this move this levelled out. Beautifully presented and handled well. Excitable initially but once she settled she demonstrated lovely, sound movement which won her the class and Reserve Best of Breed.
2nd Hayes’ Stormberne Weather Girl. 5 year old mature bitch of different type to 1st. Good bone and substance for size and correct body proportions. Pretty head with broad skill finished with classic markings and a freckled blaze. Dark almond shaped eyes and a kind expression. Well sloped shoulders but would prefer a touch more upper arm. Well ribbed with short loin. Good hocks but would prefer more bend of stifle. Topline raised over rear. Lovely thick coat. Moved well in front but unfortunately her rear movement let her down today and she flew her tail.

Open  (3, 2)
1st Rothery’s Glamrock Graffiti Artist ShCM.
A handsome 3 year old dog of good breed type who caught my eye as soon as he came into the ring. Gorgeous, masculine head with strong muzzle, good stop, flat and broad skull. Dark almond shaped eyes with the typical soft Bernese expression. Lovely bone and substance and correct body proportions. Well angulated front, straight front legs, compact feet, well ribbed body and short loin. To be critical I would prefer a touch more bend of stifle. Strong hocks. Moved well and soundly at all angles. Classically marked, gleaming coat which was beautifully presented. I loved him and was pleased to award him Best of Breed.
Judge - Rebecca King (Leapingwell)

WORKING AND PASTORAL BREEDS OF WALES CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW 21st April 2018

Many thanks to the Association for inviting me to judge and to the Bernese Mountain Dog exhibitors for their entry, the lovely atmosphere at ringside and the sporting way they took my decisions. Special thanks to my stewards, Jason and Lana, who kept the ring moving along nicely.

Veteran Dog or Bitch  (2 entries, 1 absentee)
1st Griffiths, Slade & Orme's Ch Jaybiem Vou Doo At Potterspride.
7 years old and a worthy champion. Medium size of lovely type, she has a balanced head, medium dark eye of good shape. She has excellent bone, good angulations front and rear. Today she was carrying a little too much condition and her topline was a shade soft on the move, but she was excellent coming and going. Best Veteran in Breed.

Puppy Dog  (1)
1st Miles' Littlehidden Jyme Spicez At Jaybiem.
9 months old, this is a big lad who is going to need some time to fill out his frame. He has a nicely developing head with a nice dark eye. He is a little steep in his upper arm and will stand better in front when his chest fills. He has a lovely reach of neck but at this time his topline is a shade soft. He has a lovely coat and a very nice temperament. I would like to have seen him a little more balanced in his side gait and he is rather proud of his tail.

Junior Dog  (1)
1st Green's Matthias Vom Durrbachler Wald At Waldershelf (Imp Nld).
13 months old, this boy was good size and shape, really well presented and handled. He is of pleasing type, I would prefer a little more strength to his head but he has a nice dark eye and excellent expression. He has good bone and feet, nice reach of neck and good topline. Excellent angulation in the rear, he is a little steep in his upper arm. He could have a little more reach in the front and be more positive coming and going.

Novice Dog  (2)
1st Galen-Bisping's Kernow Something Buzzy At Celticberns.
Medium size male of 22 months. He has a nicely balanced head, with a dark eye but the eye shape could be better. Lips are a little loose. Would prefer a little more reach of neck, he has a nice topline and croup, good bone and feet. Angulations are OK, on the move he has a tendency to pace but when settled he has a nicely balanced side gait.
2nd Akehurst's Jesterbrock Alpine Storm. 2 years old, good size male. He has good strength to his head but I would prefer a darker eye of better shape. He has a nice reach of neck, excellent bone and feet. At this time his topline is soft and while he was balanced on the move, he was rather proud of his tail which spoiled the overall picture. Very well presented and handled.

Post Graduate Dog  (5)
1st Griffiths, Orme & Miles' Jaybiem With N'Without Y'Zeus.
23 months, medium size, he has a balanced head with a nice dark eye. Ears well carried. He has a nice reach of neck, at times he just lost his topline in stance, excellent hindquarters. He has good bone and feet and was presented in excellent coat and condition. He was nicely balanced in his side gait, would just like him to have been more positive coming and going.
2nd Fairclough's Monalou Spirit Of Discovery. 3 years old, very nice type, he has a balanced head with a pleasing eye and nice expression. I would have preferred a shade more neck. He has a lovely topline, excellent bone, well angulated front and rear. I would just have liked him to be tidier coming towards and it also spoiled his side gait too.
3rd Marshall's Matthew Puchate Perly Of Bernannan (Imp Pol).

1st Baldwin's Meadowpark First Class For Fortonpark.
2 years old, medium size, lovely type, presented and handled really well. He is nicely balanced, with a very pleasing outline. He has a lovely head, super eye and expression. 4 years old, nice type of excellent size. Good strength to his head, he has a nice dark eye, lips just a little loose. Lovely reach of neck, super topline and croup. He has excellent bone and feet, just a little steep in his upper arm. Well presented and handled, he could have been a little more positive coming towards.
3rd Richards' Marrack Van't Pachtof Von Richenbern (Imp Bel).

Open Dog  (4)
1st Hartley-Mair & Dybdall's Ch Meadowpark High Class.
3 years old of good size, lovely type. He has a nicely balanced head of good strength with a super eye and expression. Nice reach of neck, excellent topline and hindquarters. Excellent bone and feet. He is well angulated front and rear, stands well at all times and is perfectly balanced in his side gait. Presented in super coat and condition. Pleased to award him the Dog CC and Best of Breed and to later see him go on to win the Working Group and Best in Show.
2nd Bird & Bridges' Ch Kernow Something. 3 years old of medium size. He has a balanced head with a nice dark eye. He could have a little more reach of neck and flow a little better into the topline. He has excellent bone and feet, well developed chest. Angulations are good front and rear and he was well presented and handled. Good coming and going but I would like to have seen him more balanced in his side gait.
3rd  Gopal's Ch Collansues Secret Bridges.

Puppy Bitch  (3, 1)
1st Hartley-Mair's Meadowpark Touch Of Class.
Just 10 months old and one of the stars of the day for me. She is a lovely pup of super type with a balanced feminine head. Nice reach of neck, good topline and hindquarters. Excellent bone and feet, nicely balanced on the move. She held a lovely shape standing and as the day went on she got better and better. I did consider her for the Reserve CC but she has plenty of time. Delighted to watch her win the Working Puppy Group and ultimately Best Puppy in Show and to discover that she was a daughter of my Best of Breed Winner. Best Puppy in Breed.
2nd Goodyear's Harvestbank Indian Summer. Almost a year old, she is a very attractively headed girl with a lovely eye and expression. She has a nice reach of neck, good bone and feet and was well presented and handled. Today she was carrying a little too much weight which spoiled her topline and balance on the move.

Junior Bitch  (7, 1)
1st Spencer's Padiky Starr Studded Skye.
17 months old girl, who was beautifully handled. She has a balanced head with a nice eye and expression. Excellent skull, good bone and feet. Nice reach of neck and good topline and hindquarters. I felt she could have a little more flexibility in her pastern.
2nd Tomkins' Kinelarty Free As A Bird For Bernershaw. 12 months old and looking quite babyish in this class but she has a pleasing head with a nice eye and expression. Super bone, she has a nice reach of neck, good topline and she moved freely. Could be a little cleaner coming and going but I did point this out to handler who could be more to blame than the dog!!
3rd Weston's Bernfawr Jonquill.

Post Graduate Bitch  (8, 1)
1st Miles' Jaybiem My My My.
Almost 2 years old this was a very typy bitch of good size and shape. A strong but balanced head with a nice eye. She has excellent bone and feet, lovely flow from the neck into the topline, good hindquarters. Very balanced in her outline and well presented and handled, she has a very nice side gait. She did not seem totally happy in the surroundings today.
2nd Bird & Head's Cullumbern Roman Toga With Millermead JW. 19 months, she is medium size and of pleasing type. She has a balanced head, excellent bone and feet. Losing topline slightly when standing. She has excellent hindquarters but I would have liked her more balanced in her side gait.

1st Baldwin's Fortonpark Chasing Dreams.
2 years old, of lovely type. She has a pleasing feminine head, lovely eye and expression. Nice reach of neck with a good flow into a lovely topline. She has excellent bone and feet. Excellent body proportions. Well presented and handled, she was nicely balanced on the move with excellent reach in the front. Pleased to award her the Bitch CC which I believe is her second, hope the crowning CC comes along soon.
2nd Miles' Jaybiem Burli Shassi. JW 2 years old, really nice type with an attractive headpiece. Lovely eye and expression, super reach of neck, excellent topline and hindquarters. Open Bitch  (7, 1)
1st Hartley-Mair's Meadowpark Special Blend.
3 years old of medium size. Very pleasing outline and very eye catching on the move. Well presented and handled, she has a balanced feminine head, nice dark eye, ears of good size, well carried. She has good bone and feet, just a shade weak on the pastern. Excellent angulation front and rear, lovely topline. Moved freely, she has a super side gait, could be a little tidier coming towards. Pleased to award her the Reserve Bitch CC in a nice line up of bitches.
2nd Baldwin's Fortonpark Lilly's Delight. 2 years old, lovely headed girl, nice dark eye, nice reach of neck. Topline just a shade soft behind the withers. Excellent bone and feet, good angulations front and rear, I would just like to have seen her more balanced in her side gait.
3rd  Morgan's Welshbern Sweet Lady At Judabern.
Judge - Paul Lawless

Best in Show - Judged by Colin Reed
What an achievement by officers and committee of this association. I must thank them for the invitation to judge the Working Group and Best in Show at a venue that holds many good memories for me. Can I also thank that eminent judge who, after the event, considered my effort as an "eye for a dog" method of judging. Yes, it's the only way to judge I have ever known, but that observation meant so much to me.

Best in Show - Bernese Mountain Dog Ch. Meadowpark High Class. This animal filled me with joy as beautiful. Its quality that counts and this exhibit had it in abundance. Its general balance, form and construction was a delight. And its movement was all part of this, confirming its place as number one in the working group.

Best Puppy in Show - Bernese Mountain Dog Hartley-Mair's Meadowpark Touch of Class. Another quality exhibit in lovely condition. Typical head qualities and neck on excellent front quarters. Plenty of body with pleasing topline. Handled to its best.
