I'm told that that Irene McManus,
subject to KC confirmation, will now judge Bernese at Border Union 2018 following Julie Vaughan's withdrawal from that appointment.

The committee of the Northern BMD Club certainly chose the date of their Championship Show very well! Held on 25th March at Thirsk Farmers Auction Mart, the weather was cold but light, bright and sunny so allowing the judging to be held outside in rings on the hard standing adjacent to the hall. Not the warmest of venues but offering excellent catering (always a BIG relief for dog show organisers!) which was well received and appreciated by those who took advantage of the roast dinner on offer! I understand that the BMD Club of GB Breed Stand was in attendance plus a very well-filled raffle table.

Also for the first time at this show there was parade of Bernese and carts organised by the Pennine Bernese Carters.

The judge this year was Newfoundland breeder Del Richards (Sheridel) who was awarding CCs for the first time. Del is the wife of Hedd Richards who has previously awarded CCs in Bernese and is the scheduled judge for our breed at Crufts 2019.

Thank you very much to Club secretary Shelagh Corrigan for sending me a marked catalogue and to Marian Scott for emailing some results too. There were 103 entries with 10 absentees and 1 withdrawn.

Winning his 35th CC plus Best of Breed was Ch Meadowpark High Class handled by Carole Hartley-Mair and jointly bred with Bernice Mair and Gary Dybdall. A son of Ch Meadowpark Vertigo JW x Meadowpark Northern Blend. Milo was 2nd UK Top Dog All Breeds 2017 and with this win he now holds the Bernese Breed Record for male Bernese in the UK - quite an achievement for a young dog who is just three years and two months old. Carole's 9 month old homebred bitch Meadowpark Touch Of Class, sired by Milo x Ch Meadowpark Breezing On won Best Puppy in Show too so I expect there was quite a celebration at Meadowpark.

The Reserve CC was awarded to Karen Bird and Shandy Bridges' jointly owned Ch Kernow Something ShCM who is 3 1/2 years old, sired by Ch Shirdees Love Me Do At Cullumbern JW ShCM x Kernow Uptou and bred by Shandy.

It was an 8th CC plus Reserve Best in Show for Joanne and Trevor Sutton's homebred Ch Bernsteph Dior Remember Me JW ShCM who had made the long trip north. This 5 year old bitch is sired by Tickbern Over The Moon x Sennensson Nina Ricci At Bernsteph.

June Miles homebred Jaybiem Burli Shassi won Post Graduate Bitch and then took the Reserve Bitch CC. Two years old, she is by Jaybiem Y'euben Chozen JW ShCM x Ch Meadowpark Sweetest Thing At Jaybiem who is a litter sister to the sire of the Best of Breed winner. June also bred the Best Veteran winner, 7 1/2 year old Ch Jaybiem Voo Doo At Potterspride JW. Owned by Gary Griffiths, Mandy Orme and Violet Slade, she is a daughter of Ch Jaybiem Utwo JW ShCM x Jaybeim Commen Tally Vous. Congratulations.

ROCHDALE & DISTRICT CS OPEN SHOW Saturday 31st March 2018

Many thanks to the committee for inviting me to judge at this lovely well run show.
Thank you to my stewards and to all exhibitors who turned out in such awful weather and who were very sporting in my placing decisions.

Puppy  (2 entries)
1st Tomkins' Kinelarty Free As A Bird For Bernershaw.
Very pleasing 11 month old puppy bitch with feminine expression, dark almonds eye, ears used well, medium length of neck. Nicely angulated throughout, straight topline held on the move, well boned straight front legs sat on round compact feet. Nicely coupled, rounded rump, would prefer a little more length in leg. Nicely marked with a happy temperament. Well presented, moved well. Best Puppy and pleased to watch her be awarded Working Puppy Group 3.
2nd Wood's Cegshes Cadmus.  11 month old male, correct ratios. Excels in head with strong flat skull and strong muzzle, dark eye. Good depth of chest, well ribbed, straight back, good rear angulation, neat feet. Correct length of tail. Well off for bone, moved well, just needs to grow a little more in confidence.

Junior  (2)
1st Green's Matthias Vom Durrbachler Wald At Waldershelf (Imp Nld).
Really loved the overall picture that this 1 year old boy produced today, totally balanced all through which won him top honours. Correctly
assembled with good body ratios, strong in skull with dark almond eye, correct bite, strong straight muzzle, muscular neck of good length. Good depth of chest, deep brisket, well ribbed, straight front legs on neat feet, moderate bone. Well angulated throughout enabling him to move freely and hold a straight topine on the move. Strong loin, good turn of stifle, hocks well let down, tail of good length carried well. Super mover, nicely marked, maturing nicely, handled well. Best of Breed.
2nd Wood's Cegshes Cadmus.

Post Graduate  (2 entries, 2 absentees)

Open  (3, 1)
1st Hughes' Waldershelf Causing Kaos.
3 year old impressive looking male, broad skull, dark almonds eye, correct bite, ears of good shape and used well. Medium length of neck, broad chest, good bone, straight front legs on compact feet. Firm back, rounded rump, nicely angulated throughout. Tail of good length but
carried a little high. Tad long in hock. Nicely marked in a great coat, well presented, a little overweight for me today. Reserve Best of Breed.
2nd Fairclough's Monalou Spirit Of Discovery.
3 year old dog maturing nicely with good ratios, narrower in skull and muzzle than 1, lighter in eye but a good shape, ears used well, scissor bite. Would prefer more length of neck, well angulated throughout, strong straight front legs. Broad chest, well ribbed, firm straight back, rounded rump. Correct length of tail. Well presented in a full coat with nice markings and super feathering. Moved a little close behind today.
Judge - Julie Ann Wright (Roesilbern)
