Bernese News 21st August 2015

Thank you to the Scottish BMD Club for the kind invitation to Judge. I was pleased to have a good
entry and this gave me a real variety of dogs in both type and size.  I thoroughly enjoyed my day
and found some great Bernese.  Presentation on the whole was very good with clean and well-
behaved dogs.
Veteran Bitch  (9 entries, 2 absentees)
Super class with some wonderful oldies, well done to you all.
1st  Jones & Carr's Markeila Little Gem At Beaucroft.  This lovely girl at 8 1/2 years old really
stood out in the class. Substantial, well made girl with a strong yet feminine head.  In good coat
and well-presented. Moved well around the ring.  Well done and thank you for bringing her. Best
2nd Ch Gerrard's Torralbaz Designer Diamond.
8 year old  girl with a strong feminine head,
dark almond eyes with a well-proportioned body.  A little out of coat today but still giving a super
outline. Another fit healthy bitch who is a credit to her owner.
Minor Puppy Bitch  (3, 1)
1st Jones & Carr's Greta Garbo From Aberash To Beaucroft (Imp Bgr).
  A lovely young
bitch who is maturing nicely.  Very feminine look about her, super body shape, good angulation
front and rear. Movement excellent for such a young dog. Presented in great condition.
2nd Granger's Shirdees Harlow Jean Harlow Of Shadybower.  Another pleasing young bitch.
Head maturing well, beautiful dark almond eye. Looks a real picture standing, but a little unnerved
on the day and this resulted in erratic movement which is difficult to assess.  Presented in
A1 condition.
Puppy Bitch  (8, 2)
1st King's Ecalpharas Moonshine Over Leapingwell.
Just loved this young bitch.  Whilst still a
long way from maturity, definitely heading in the right direction.  Compact, well-made body, level
topline, good angulation front and rear. In great condition and presented well. Moved well and
absolutely in tune with her owner, which is a real pleasure to see.  Best Puppy Bitch.
2nd Green's Kibou De Neboa De Meigas At Pasturegreen (Imp).  Another lovely young bitch,
7 months old, with a strong head, dark melting eyes and correct earset.  Taller than 1st and needs
to fill out. Think she will be impressive as she matures. Again a pleasure to see another young
bitch, presented immaculately, working well, and enjoying her day out.
Junior Bitch  (5, 1)
1st Green's Millenium Star J'Adore Dior At Pasturegreen (Imp).
15 month old girl with a strong
head, dark eyes and good earset. Reasonable bone, well angulated front and back.  Good tailset.
Out of coat at present but has a pleasing outline, particularly when she moves. A lot of maturing
to do but plenty of time to come on.
2nd Marsden & Robertson's Trudaleaze Majik Potion.  Close decision with 1st, not quite the
head of winner.  However, in full coat and a very pleasing outline standing. Good bone and
reasonable angulation.  Moved very well.
Yearling Bitch  (10, 2)
1st Baldwin's Meadowpark Living My Dream At Fortonpark.
  A super bitch presented in
impeccable condition. Very much stood out in the class.  Strong, feminine head, good stop.  Well-
proportioned body, good lay of shoulder with good bone and reasonable angulation both front and
back. Moved easily round the ring, a pleasure to watch.
2nd Davidson's Meadowpark Pure Breeze.   Another quality bitch, medium sized, with a
pleasing overall outline. Not quite the head of 1st but loved her super dark eyes and pleasing
expression. Moved well and should mature into a lovely bitch.
Maiden Bitch  (4, 1)
1st  Calder's Bernjovi Bed Of Roses.
Good size, strong head, dark eye and correct earset.
Good substantial bone, nice tailset and in excellent condition.  A little exuberant but moved well
once settled.
2nd Soame's Jaybiem Bornfree.  Substantial bitch.  Head needs to mature a little, has super
dark eyes and correct earset. Body coming on nicely, a little out of coat. Moved very well.
Novice Bitch  (6, 2)
1st Boyd's Lujento Jessie Jay.
A super young bitch with a strong, feminine head.  Good bone
and angulation. Pleasing outline standing which she kept on the move.  Well presented in strong,
fit condition and worked well with her owner.  Liked her a lot, will watch out for her in the future.
2nd  Marsden & Robertson's Trudaleaze Majik Potion
Graduate Bitch  (4, 1)
1st  Davidson's Meadowpark Pure Breeze:
2nd  Cumming's Clanquaich I De Declair.
Taller bitch still with lots of maturing to do.  Stands
well but completely out of coat which put her at a disadvantage against others. However, one of
the best movers in the younger classes.
Post Graduate Bitch  (10, 2)
1st Shopland-Reed's Fleur De Neboa De Meigas (Imp).
Just 2 years old, but an impressive
youngster, well made.  Head maturing well, kind eye, and good earset.  Looks super standing
and keeps her shape on the move. Worked really well with owner and presented in excellent
2nd Thompson's Trudaleaze She's Gorjus.  Bigger bitch overall with good head, dark eyes
and correct earset. Presented in excellent condition and moved very well.  Stands well with
level topline, just not quite the maturity of 1st.
Mid Limit Bitch  (9, 4)
1st  Baldwin's Fortonpark Dutch Design.
A beautiful, pretty head with super dark eyes with
a lovely expression. She is smaller overall but well made with good bone and well angulated.
Stands beautifully for her owner, has a level topline and carries well on the move.  Presented
very well and overall in great condition.
2nd Rossall's Fortonpark Molly Malone.  A slightly bigger bitch than 1st and not quite the
profile of 1st but a super, strong, feminine head with beautiful eyes.  Has well-laid shoulders
and good angulation, which enabled her to move very well in both directions. Presented and
handled expertly.
Limit Bitch  (11, 4)
One of the strongest classes of the day, lots of quality bitches, lovely to judge.
1st Atherton's Athersbern Peronelle Blush.   This super mid-sized bitch caught my attention
as soon as she entered the ring. Super feminine head with a melting expression, dark eye and
correct earset . Well bodied, mature looking, level topline with correct tailset.  Good shoulder
placement, well angulated front and rear.  Obviously very fit by the way she moved with ease
around the ring. Handled and shown excellently. A super young bitch and well deserved CC
and Best Opposite Sex.
2nd Green's Fortonpark Millie My Love At Pasturegreen.
Very close decision with 1st as
you could not fail to notice this happy, outgoing, quality bitch whose tail never stopped wagging
and was shown to perfection by her owner.  Sweet, feminine head, beautiful dark eyes and
correct earset. Compact and well-bodied with a super topline, good angulation and correct tailset.
Moved easily, and with drive. Pushed hard for the CC. At 6 years old a credit to the breed.
Reserve CC.
Open Bitch  (11, 4)
1st Baldwin's Ch Fortonpark Dutch Delight.
Stood out in this class,  Good sized yet feminine,
great outline with a  gleaming jet black coat in absolute beautiful condition.  Good shoulder
placement, deep chested and with good front and rear angulation.  Moved with drive both coming
and going. Superbly handled and a treat to go over.
2nd Gerrard's Monalou Dutch By Design At Torralbaz. Another good sized bitch, well made with
a great outline.  Deep chest, well angulated front and rear, level topline.  Good head, dark eye and
well laid shoulders.  Moved with ease around the ring, a pleasure to watch. Close decision with 1st.
Judge - Richard Hallam (Oldberne)

Firstly , thanks to my stewards who endured the rain with me. The soggy paperwork made their
job increasingly difficult.

I hope the exhibitors will forgive this overview of my entry rather than individual critiques on all
winners but I have barely managed to decipher my notes and the judging book, which was ruined
by the rain, is in fact still drying out (along with my shoes) 36 hours later.

The critiques I am writing are being done mainly from memory.  After Junior Bitch the constant
rain became too heavy to continue so we decamped to the very inadequate wet weather ring.
I was disappointed to have quite a few nervous youngsters.  i don't think there can be much worse
for a dog than to be put in a situation which really upsets him/her.

I was looking for good temperament along with type, size, substance and positive movement: all
necessary attributes for a draught dog. Quite a few were of good shape but had no substance or
potential to develop such.

My main winners were all very typy with confident temperaments along with the necessary size,
substance and bone as befits a draught dog who would be expected to be capable of pulling a
cart of full milk churns.
Congratulations to all exhibitors lucky enough to have a veteran entered today.  They were all a
credit to their owners in their condition and movement. Thank you for bringing them.
Best Puppy was Shirdees Joe Dimaggio at Bramikdel. A cracking, most eye-catching baby, happy
and exuberant as a puppy should be. Handled calmly and sympathetically to get the best out of
him. Strong, straight bone leading to tight feet.  Well developed body of correct proportions. Moved
steadily in all directions. A most promising youngster. I shall follow his career with interest and
wish him luck.
Dog CC Shirdees Continental.   A well deserved win today for this most typy male who looks
perfectly capable of doing a day’s work. He motored tirelessly round the ring with a ground covering
easy gait, his handler expertly matching the dog's stride.  Sound in all directions.  Gorgeous
masculine  head and expression which just slightly gave him the edge over the Reserve CC winner.
I hope his other 2 tickets follow quickly. He well deserves to be made up.
Reserve CC Dog  Jaybiem I Tri for Shadybower. A close run thing and he was just pipped at the
post by Continental. A good masculine type, full of substance and moving out well.  Stands four
square and alert to his handler. I am sure his day will come.
Bitch CC and Best of Breed Vellbern You Japanese Gem. A very strong bitch whose movement
belies her size. She covered the ground effortlessly with a long, powerful stride which was a
pleasure to watch. We are losing size and certainly substance in the breed today and a bitch of
these proportions is what we should strive to produce.  femininity combined with size with a
gorgeous head and expression. Solid in bone, body and temperament.  A lovely girl.
Bitch Reserve CC  Vellbern The Raindancer.  Daughter of the C.C. winner and definitely out of
the same mold. Excellent bone, calm, steady temperament, Moved well in all directions.
Another I can visualise well was the Junior Dog winner who deserves a mention.  Bernemcourt
Liv’n On Prayer. A quality young male, mature in stature with excellent bone.  Well turned stifles
and a strong mover . Lovely head with kind expression and dark almond eyes. Strong muzzle.
Well handled and very promising. An easy winner of the class.
I apologise to those on whom I have not commented.
I was embarrassed only to have paltry strips of ribbon, not even a rosette to give to the main
winners. I feel that with an entry price of £26, Bournemouth CA should have been able to give at
least a super rosette to the winners in such a good entry.
