Bernese News 24th August 2018

Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) is a debilitating condition that has occurred in Bernese and is something that an increasing number of breeders and owners are becoming aware of.  Bernese breeder Madeline Knowles has kindly given her permission for me to reproduce her graphic designed to help increase understanding of inheritance and thereby assist breeders to make informed choices when planning a litter.

Thank you to the Committee for inviting me to judge one of my favourite breeds. And many thanks to my two stewards Liz and Nigel Lawson, who ran the ring so efficiently.

I have judged this breed for many years and enjoy them so very much every time I do. A beautiful and gentle breed with a lovely temperament. Thank you also to the exhibitors who gave me a lovely entry of fifty-three but sadly there were nineteen absentees. However, I was spoilt for choice as far as quality was concerned, and had to nitpick in several classes. Several different types but all good representatives of the breed. It was a lovely and sunny day and it was getting hot by the time the bitches were being judged and some were flagging a little and not so positive on the move.

I would like to mention a couple of points noted from last time I judged; some fronts could have been better and necks were short and a few rumps could have been a bit more rounded. Size varied. Bone in general was good for the frame and size. Bites on the whole were excellent and the teeth were white and so clean, no matter how old the dogs were. Coats were generally good, soft and silky with natural sheen, and excellent markings. Movement varied too, and I would have liked to have seen a few more dogs with strides ‘reaching out well in front’. Finally, please, do not run too fast round the ring, it is the correct action that needs to be seen, not the fastest moving dog.

Junior Dog   (1 entry )

1st Hartley-Mair & Dybdall’s Meadowpark Picture Perfect. Three year old bitch who appealed in outline, very balanced in head and body with a lovely neckline. Feminine head with a kind and attentive expression. A tiny fraction smaller than I usually like but could not deny her top honour today based on her quality and performance. She was in good coat and condition and moved soundly without any effort at all. Bitch CC.

A nicely angulated front with a good forechest but could have a fraction more angulation in rear. She is well off for substance, good depth of chest, well boned, She had a level topline when she stood correctly but had a tendency to drop it but kept it level on the move. She has a nicely rounded rump and a good tail set. She moved well round the ring but in the challenge for Reserve CC she lacked enthusiasm and drive.
