CENTRAL BERNESE MOUNTAIN DOG CLUB OPEN SHOW 19th May 2019

Firstly, I would like to say a huge thank you to the club for inviting me to judge their club show. It is always an honour for an aspiring breed judge to judge at a breed club event. The dogs were in good condition across the board and all very well presented. What we need to work together on as a breed is front construction and movement fore and aft. A lot of dogs have great side profile movement but can be disappointing fore and aft. I’m sure if we pull together this is something that will be improved on over time.

A big thank you to my stewards Irene and my other (apologies I did not write his name down). Both were very competent and in excellent humorous spirit. The weather was kind which allowed the day to be completed outside on the grass in a supersized ring. I was treated with the upmost respect throughout the day from both the committee members and the exhibitors, only 1 exhibitor chose to withdraw after their first class. And finally, a HUGE well done to the new show manager Julie Wright on organising and delivering a smooth and well-run event, you were on the ball with everything!

Veteran Dog No entries

Minor Puppy Dog (2 entries)

1st King, Green & Dedman’s Parwizz Vom Durrbachler Wald At Arvella (Imp Nld). 7months old, masculine in head. Good bone underneath a huge coat, a shapely boy and correct in ratios. Typical markings. A fabulous temperament and he had an abundance of confidence. To be super critical I would like a better length to upper arm and despite him being all over the place in relation to his growing I certainly believe that he is going to be a very nice exhibit in the future. Best Puppy in Show.
2nd Wilson’s Blumental Cadfael. 6 months and very much a baby. Darker markings and masculine head, dark eye. He has very good angulation which made him a tad close behind but this should improve once he’s stopped growing. A good topline which held on the move. A nice shapely puppy.

Puppy Dog (1)
1st Fairclough’s Monalou Galloping Gourmet.
9 months, masculine head that he will grow into. Super bone and shape with level topline. Nice length to neck, Good angulation fore and aft and steady balanced movement. Super temperament.

Junior Dog (3 entries, 2 absentees)
1st Miles’s Jaybiem Modus Operandi.
Nearly 13 months. Gorgeous boy of average size, excellent bone. Super head and expression and rich dark tan. Good front angles and straight front, good turn of stifle and stood on tight catlike feet. A super mover for a youngster, bright future. Reserve Best Dog.
2nd Round’s Collansues Wildest Dreams.
12 months and an over exuberant character. Good size but a little light in bone. Good head and expression. Stands on correct feet with a well held topline. Difficult to truly assess - needs ringcraft.

Yearling Dog (1,1)

Post Graduate Dog (5)
1st King & Green’s Joseph Vom Durrbachler Wald At Arvella (Imp Nld).
2 ½ years old and looking well here and slowly maturing. An honest head and expression which is developing well. Good length of neck, well placed shoulders and upper arm but fairly weak in pastern. Well angulated behind and a sound overall mover.
2nd King & Bramble’s Shirdees Leathal Weapon. 3 years old and very similar in shape to 1st. Masculine head and expression, dark eyes full of mischief. Good length of neck and correct front and hind angles. Well off for bone, sound movement front and back once settled. This boy was ‘on one’ a bit today.

Limit Dog (4, 1 withdrawn but attended previous class)
1st. Fairclough’s Monalou Spirit Of Discovery.
4 years old, strong, honest head and expression with well-placed ears. Good neck. Ample bone, painted a mature shape today. Strong topline both on the stand and on the move - movement which was sound in all directions. My only criticism would be that he could do with a tad more length to his upper arm. Lovely calm nature.
2nd Watson's Jesterbrock Alpine Glory At Stepdashar. 3 years old, masculine head but slightly domed for me. Dark almond shaped eyes. Good length to neck, topline could be stronger. Ample angles fore and aft, good tail set and free movement.

Open Dog (6,1)
1st Granger’s Jaybiem Orlando Bloom JW ShCM.
5 years old and full of maturity. I thought he looked absolutely gorgeous today. Excellent type, strong bone, good length of neck, super front and hind angles which then allows his movement to be correct. Tight cat like feet and to top, excellent markings all round. Best Dog and Reserve Best in Show.
2nd Griffith, Orme & Miles’ Jaybiem With N'Without Yzeus JW. 3 years old and very similar to 1st in type and shape - just a tad longer in loin. Good strong head, good bone and another sound mover.

Veteran Bitch (2)
1st Atherton’s Ch Athersbern Peronelle Blush.
7 years young, average size but a complete package. Super type, feminine yet strong head with melting yet cheeky expression. Good bone, correct ratios. Tight feet, strong topline, stood four square at all times, sound and balanced movement. One of the best happy temperaments. Pushed hard for both top honours but I was faced with three beautiful examples in the challenge.
2nd Clough’s Bernark's Super Summer. Nearly 8 years old, feminine and pretty head. Good angles in front and hind, tight feet with effortless movement. Such a happy girl showing no age.

Minor Puppy Bitch (5,1)
1st Wright & Kirk's Objet D'Art Du Hameau De Batka Avec Roesilbern (Imp Fra).
8 months old, strong but feminine girl. Feminine head which will continue to develop, dark and kindest eye. Ample bone for size. Good length of neck, well placed shoulders and enough upper arm, level topline, good turn of stifle and a sound mover - promising.
2nd Small’s Malindibeach Boodles Of Fun. 7 months, quite small but correct in angles and ratios. Feminine head and expression that will no doubt develop. Easy mover.

Puppy Bitch (3)
1st Gould’s Waldershelf Lexiellent.
9 months, big typey girl, big bone. Super head and expression, dark almond shaped eyes and well-placed ears. Light on her feet and easy mover with excellent drive and a strong topline held. Just my type but would like better upper arm length. Best Puppy Bitch.
2nd King & Green’s Olivia Vom Durrbachler Wald At Arvella (Imp Nld) TAF.
11 months old, smaller and slightly longer than 1st but plenty of time to come up on her legs. Lots to like about this girl, feminine and pretty head with melting expression. Good angles all round and a sound mover.
It is worth noting that I really liked 3rd as well but she paced around the ring. I later learned that she had been in a car accident the previous week so she definitely deserves a well done!!

Junior Bitch (6, 4)
Sound class.
1st Wright & Kirk's Objet D'Art Du Hameau De Batka Avec Roesilbern (Imp Fra).
2nd Sutton & Davenport-Willis’ Nelstephbern Dior Forever.
16 months, smaller girl who left all her coat at home. Correct in angles and ratios and nothing to hide today. Feminine all round, ample bone for size, excellent topline. Correct tail carriage and good feet.

Yearling Bitch (4, 3)
1st Worrall’s Jesterbrock Dragonstone At Oakburn.
22 months, feminine and honest head. Felt she could do with more bone. Good ratios and sound mover.

Post Graduate Bitch (5, 2)
1st Atherton’s Arvella Penny Lane.
21 months, a tad bald today. Strong head with lovely dark eyes. Good length of neck and really nice to go over, simply correct. Level topline, good front movement and drive from behind. Very sound - like her.
2nd Watson’s Stepdashar Winters Wish. Smaller than 1st but a shapely girl. Lovely head and expression. Well placed shoulders, good hind angulation, enough bone for size and an easy mover.

Limit Bitch (6, 2)
1st King & Brambles Shirdees Miss Congeniality JW.
Ooft where do I start? Type, bone and shape in abundance. I haven’t seen this girl in a while but she certainly did not disappoint. Strong yet feminine head and expression. Excellent to go over, super movement and excellent drive. I was truly spoilt in the challenge and she only lost out to me preferring the length of loin of the Open bitch. Reserve Best Bitch.
2nd Granger’s Shirdees Harlow Jean Of Shadybower JW.
4 years old, taller than most, excellent overall conformation. Feminine head yet strong in expression - always been a fan of this girl. Good angles throughout but could do to move faster so she can extend her legs.

Open Bitch (6, 3)
1st Miles' Ch Jaybiem Burli Shassi.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this girl and now she has matured she has super type, a beautiful shape, style, good bone. Going over her she presents correct angles throughout, a strong topline and correct feet. Her head is dark in markings and feminine. Moved like a dream with her handler today. Best Bitch and Best in Show.
2nd Watson’s Stepdashar Sommer Girl.
5 ½ years old, strong head and good expression. Excellent bone, would like more upper arm. Presented a lovely shape and was very sound in movement.
Judge- Leena Pawlyszyn (Matera)

This is a lovely breed and I thoroughly enjoyed my entry of 76 from 73 dogs. We were lucky weather-wise as for most of the time it was overcast and not too hot for the BMDs.

Puppy Dog (3 entries)
1st and Best Puppy King, Green & Dedman’s Parwizz Vom Durrbachler Wald At Arvella (Imp Nld).
9 months and much more mature looking than the other two in this class. Good outline and proportions, excellent bone. Dark, kind eyes, masculine head. Best mover in this class, very well handled.
2nd Dybdall, Lydon & Hughes’ Carraigbern Noble Heart Of Rodiveco (IKC). 6 months, raw baby but got his act together eventually, moved reasonably well once he got into his stride. Attractive head, good body and coat, needs to improve in front.
3rd Bird’s Cullumbern Milano.

Junior Dog No entries

Post Graduate Dog (4 entries, 1 absentee)
1st Flanagan’s Collansues Magical Spell.
20 months. Very good side gait, fit and healthy young male. Pleasing head and eyes. Well fitting coat, in first class condition, happy and co-operative.
2nd Bridges’ Kernow Troublue. 18 months, handled to advantage. Firm body, good coat. Attractive head, moved OK.
3rd Knight’s Cullumbern Roman Road At Kernow.

Limit Dog (5)
1st Cooke & Stevens’ Tickbern Vagabond.
2 years, relaxed showman with an easy stride. Excellent coat, body and condition. Flat skull, typical head. Showed well for his owner, moved up a gear when competing for the Reserve CC and got it.
2nd King & Green’s Joseph Vom Durrbachler Wald At Arvella JW (Imp Nld). A size smaller than 1st and another good moving Bernese. Attractive head, intelligent expression. In very good condition, well handled to always look his best.
3rd Bridges’ Kernow Troubadour JW.

Open Dog (3)
1st, CC and Best of Breed Baldwin’s Meadowpark First CLass For Fortonpark JW.
Nearly 4, well balanced and proportioned, very nice all quality dog. Very sound mover, showed with animation. Excellent head properties, kind eyes and expression. Very good bone, lovely personality. Yes he raised his tail a little when moving, possibly because of his extrovert attitude.
2nd Vaychkus & Vaickus’ Flintas Kalnu Suo At Bernaroso ShCM (Imp Lit). Nearly 6, in excellent condition. Tpical head. In full coat, good bone and body, preferred shoulder placement of 1st.
3rd Green’s Ch Alpenspirit Pure Pleasure For Arvella (Imp Can).

Veteran Dog (1)
1st Cooke & Stevens’ Tickbern Ridin’ High.
7 years, fit and strong looking. Pleasing head, flat skull. Good coat. Moved and showed well, no sign of old age creeping up.

Special Beginners Dog or Bitch (1)
1st Nrozowska’s Lawenda Przyniose Ci Szczescie (Imp Pol).
8 month old bitch, feminine but all over the place moving today, tendency to pace. Clean coat, firm body.

Puppy Bitch (8, 2)
1st Wright & Kirk’s Objet D’art Du Hameau De Baika Avec Roesilbern (Imp Fra).
Nice puppy of 9 months, well proportioned with good outline. Quality head. Good coat and body, moved and showed well once she got going.
2nd Dybdall & Lydon’s Rodiveco Serendipity. 9 months, promising puppy but at the moment needs to strengthen and improve in front movement. Good bone and substance, well handled, strong body.
3rd Head’s Cullumbern Valencia Millermead.

Junior Bitch (8, 2)
1st and Reserve CC Flanagan’s Collansues Lexis Pot Of Gold.
14 months, lovely young bitch in excellent form, has a lot going for her. Very good head and expression, great personality. Strong, fit body, sound active mover. Clean well presented coat, responded well to her handler. I liked everything about her.
2nd Bridges’ Liskarn A Million Dreams. 12 months, quite a big girl. Quality head. Good bone and substance, well handled and conditioned. Rolled in the back when moving.
3rd Williams’ Tinland Pink Sapphire.

Post Graduate Bitch (10, 2)
1st Sutton & Davenport-Willis’ Nelstephbern Dior Foreva.
19 months, feminine and assertive young lady. Intelligent expression, flat skull. Firm body, good coat. Moved well, well handled and presented.
2nd Harris’ Meadowpark’s Dancin’ On My Own. I preferred the femininity of 1st but a strongly built 2 year old with excellent bone, substance, big body and rib. Well handled, steady mover.
3rd Dybdall & Lydon’s Tjofselinas Uk Ella Rose For Meadowpark (Imp Swe).

Limit Bitch (5, 2)
1st Bird & Head’s Cullumbern Roman Toga With Millermead JW.
2 1/2 years carrying too much weight today but she still moved pretty well. Good head and outline, excellent bone. Showed well, handled to advantage.
2nd Weston’s Bernfawr Jonquill. 2 1/2 years, clearly enjoying her moment in the ring as she showed herself to advantage. Fit and well conditioned, just looking a bit rangy.
3rd Oakaby’s Tickbern Teasle At Iscabern.

Open Bitch (6, 2)
1st and CC, Hughes’ Ir Ch Werlwind’s Celtic Dream For Carraigbern.
3 years, excellent overall proportions. Strong bone, good feet. Quality head. Clean coat, very well presented, easy mover with plenty of drive. Worthy CC winner.
2nd Miles’ Ch Jaybiem Burli Shassi JW. 3 years, not far behind winner here, moved well. Typical head, excellent coat. Firm fit body, just tired a little on the last lap round.
3rd Baldwin’s Fortonpark Lilly’s Delight.
