Bernese News  7th January 2019

I am deeply saddened to tell you that Gaye Strassen (St Fillans) passed away at her home yesterday, Sunday 6th January 2019 with her family by her side.

Gaye had fought long and bravely against a terminal illness, keeping her wicked sense of humour and compassion for others right up to the end. I believe Gaye was 61 years old.

Gaye was smart and forthright and knowledgeable and Bernese will be all the poorer for her premature loss. My sincere condolences to Gaye's husband John, daughter Sarah, step-daughter Charlotte and all other family and friends.

Gaye's close friend Gill Sharman (Gillro) wrote;
"Gaye Strassen nee Sansom was a dedicated breeder of Bernese Mountain Dogs and Cavaliers using the affix St Fillans. Gaye had a long pedigree of showing dogs having an aunt who bred and showed Golden Retrievers; indeed Gaye showed her aunt's dogs when she was 11years old. Meeting Elizabeth Wrighton (now Upton) of the Temeraire affix she fell in love with Bernese and owned and showed one or two males from this affix. Gaye then bred several litters with some success. A breeder of great integrity and principles, genuinely striving to improve her chosen breeds. Gaye also served on the committee and a stint as secretary of the Southern Bernese Mountain Dog Club in it's formative years. In recent years Gaye's interest was Working Trials and she had a great deal of success with her current GSD, Ryan.

"Gaye was married to John Strassen, and was mother to daughter Sarah. Gaye also had a son, Simon, who so tragically died from kidney cancer at the tender age of just 3 years old. Gaye was a true animal lover, sharing her home with two GSD's, one male and one female and two old Cavaliers, one younger plus two horses and several hand-reared sheep.

"On a personal level she was my dearest friend who I respected and admired. I will miss her."
