Bernese News 9th December 2017

The BMD Club of Great Britain Open show was held last weekend at Wantage, Oxon. Many

much appreciated Karen.

Thank you to the Society for the invitation to judge at this show, also to my excellent stewards,
husband and wife team Anne and Ron and the exhibitors for entering Bernese for my appraisal.
Numerically, an excellent entry 80 making 104, there were 26 absentees and two exhibits, one
puppy and one adult, withdrawn. Our ring was concrete based, of good size with access on two

I thoroughly enjoyed my day and there was a pleasant  atmosphere ringside with clapping for
winners and placed dogs. The breed standard clearly states what essential breed points and
characteristics are required of our large working breed.   Proportions still need attention. There
is a definite improvement in the length of upper arms, but angles still need improving. In general,
correct stance through the front pasterns seems to have improved. A number of exhibits showed
evidence of moving close through the rear pasterns and some turned their back feet out.

Temperaments on the whole were excellent, with just one or two females showing signs of being
a little hesitant during their individual examinations - happily they recovered quickly enough. After
the placings had been made in one class I witnessed one male take exception to another,
thankfully no contact was made. Some exhibits had dirty teeth, not surprisingly a couple of them
had bad breath. One or two had an unpleasant odour emitting from their body and a handful were
carrying a little too much weight evidenced in stance and moving.

I had a plethora of puppies in the four classes across both sexes. It is always a pleasure and a
great delight to handle puppies, but one needs the skill of a mountain goat to tread this path when
assessing and placing at this level. We have a late maturing breed. Puppies change from day to
day, week to week, month to month. Just because a puppy is eligible to enter a show at 6 months
of age, it does not necessarily mean he/she is ready for the ring. This is where the knowledge and
experience of an individual becomes apparent, since the "onus" is on them to make an accurate
judgement as to the readiness of their charge, before stepping into the ring. Too late when the judge
has made the decision, placings have been made and there is obvious disappointment. A judge can
only assess exhibits as they are presented on the day and if an opinion is not sought seriously and
considered to be of any value, why enter under that judge?

My Best of Breed fits the standard so well, added to which he is a real showman who thrives on
being the centre of attention and he commands it! He is a great ambassador for our breed. It is a
number of years since a Bernese male of this quality graced the UK rings. I wish his connections
every luck and success in all their endeavours with him. Delighted to see him put in a polished
performance to win the group under well respected all rounder judge Derek Smith. This really was
the icing on the cake and a day I shall never forget.
