Bernese News 11th December 2018

The year's end is rapidly approaching with just one Championship Show left for this year, LKA which takes place thjis coming Saturday, 15th at the NEC, Birmingham with the judge being breed specialist Kate MacDuff (Torridonian). The opportunity to do some Christmas shopping at this show and the chance to hand out some Christmas cards is a bonus. Postage costs inhibit the mass-mailings of festive greetings which many of us committed to in years gone by and E-greetings are commonplace but it IS nice to receive an actual card from friends and loved ones.

Lots of comments from concerned folk this past week following the online advert offering a litter of Bernese crossbreeds priced at £2,600 - and they all appear to have sold like hot cakes! What on earth are buyers thinking of?

Just few days later I received a call from a lady who has just become the "proud" breeder of a litter of 9 Bernese x puppies - planned but not pre-booked, she requested help in selling them all. The dam is a Bernese crossbreed that looks a little like a small, puny black Labrador and the sire (both parents are owned by the caller) is a non KC registered young Bernese male.

In every pedigree breed there have always been folk who went off on a tangent but nowadays this is a real concern because of the vast increase in the production of crossbreeds and unregistered purebreds. Caring, conscientious Bernese breed purists, enthusiasts and custodians are fighting a losing battle to keep their well-bred stock out of the hands of commercial opportunists. So sad.

Don't forget that the first UK Bernese Club show for 2019 is the BMD Club of Scotland Open Show which will be held at Alva on 17th February.

There is an announcement on the Homepage of the Northern BMD Club website stating that the website will be closing at the end of November and all updates will be done through the Northern Club Facebook page. Webmaster Ian Parkinson adds his thanks for the support over the past 18 years.

The BMD Club of Great Britain Open Show was held on 1st December at the usual venue, Old Mill Hall at Wantage, Oxon. Recent heavy rain had left the car park flooded with access to the hall under several inches of water which had to be cleared away by the committee and helpers.

This year the judge was breed specialist Nicky Cotton (Collansues) who had drawn 47 entries with 12 absentees across 21 classes with two dogs entered NFC. For comparison there were 65 entries with 19 absentees at the 2017 show judged by Mrs Chris John (Cristakell).

Many thanks to club secretary Karen Bird for sending me a marked catalogue which arrived on Friday - much appreciated Karen!

Shandy Bridges' long trip from Cornwall was well worth it as she had a great day winning both Best in Show with her two year old homebred Kernow Troubadour JW (Deerpark Traveling Man V Kernow Imp USA x Kernow Moon Song) and Best Puppy with his son, 11 month old Kernow Troublue who is out of Kernow All My Loving.

Best Bitch and Reserve Best in Show was awarded to Julie Bramble and Shirley King's homebred Shirdees Miss Congeniality JW who is a 2 1/2 year daughter of Ch Meadowpark High Class x Shirdees Chevrolet.

Sandy Rothery won Best Veteran with her homebred 10 1/2 year old Glamrock Future Legend who is by Monalou Touch Of Dutch To Glenbrienz ShCM x Glamrock Spirit Of Youth.

There were also four Special Members Awards classes judged by breed specialist Gemma Hearne (Snoanda) and these had attracted 17 entries with 3 absentees. Congratulations.
