Bernese News 16th February 2015
The Southern BMD Club Open Show was held on 8th February at the Mole Barn, Leatherhead

bred by Sue Flanagan and sired by Ch Kernow OhSo Special x Collansues Amaretta Rose.
Congratulations. The judge's critique can be found further down this column.
After the show Club secretary Trish Goodyear emailed;
"One thing I would like to mention is the behaviour of some of the exhibitors. Running a show is
difficult enough especially when you are short staffed. Co-operation towards our committee
instead of rudeness would be much appreciated, we give our time up for everyone to enjoy
themselves and when some exhibitors are asked to move a van/car when it is obviously
blocking a fire exit would they please do so and if an exhibitor has a problem with our stewards
then would they please speak to the show manager to air their grievances rather than be
disrespectful to the stewards directly."
The Westminster Kennel Club 139th Annual Dog Show takes place on Monday 16th and
Tuesday 17th of this week at Madison Square Garden.
Bernese are being judged on Tuesday 17th by Finnish breed specialist Satu Yla-Mononen.
There are 29 Bernese entered and the results and video footage of the judging will be posted
as usual on the official website www.westminsterkennelclub.org
SOUTHERN BMD CLUB OPEN SHOW 8th February 2015
Thanks to the committee for the invitation to judge, and for looking after me so well. I thoroughly
enjoyed my day with you. Thanks to my stewards Angela and Ellen for ensuring everything ran
smoothly, and to all exhibitors for affording me the opportunity to assess your dogs.
All exhibits were presented in clean condition and dentition on the whole was very good. I must
say that I feel that straight stifles are becoming a problem which needs to be addressed, dogs
showing this deficiency are generally poor movers due to a lack of drive from the hindquarters.
Best in Show was Ch Collansues Snow Patrol, Reserve Best in Show and Best Puppy Save
Dallas Kiss for Jaybiem, Best Veteran Collansues Special Dreamer.

Judge - John McNulty (Bernhaven)
MANCHESTER CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW 17th January 2015
I have one or two concerns about the breed, someone said I should not say but I feel that not
airing my concerns would be pointless of judging the breed in the first place.
Foreleg length is a great concern to me as they are not the right length and in some cases
resemble the front likening to the Newfoundland. Quite a few need to have more length of leg.
Front pasterns are becoming straight and inflexible, the Standard does say "slightly flexing".
Body lengths in some are too long cast, this is coming from an over-long loin which in turn
does not help the topline, particularly when moving.
Gay tails; this I feel is creeping in slowly in this breed.
Coat is of varying types, some are harsh and bitty which is certainly not soft and silky.
However I did enjoy myself and do like the breed and the people in it. So this is not a dig at
anyone but an honest opinion of how I found the breed on the day and hope it is received with
the same honest way it was given.
Minor Puppy Dog (6 entries)
1st Green's Waldershelf Here Comes Erik. I loved this dog's leg proportions and total
balance, everything about this dog was balance and style, this is what I saw on the day, particularly
his leg length. Obviously not covered in coat so you could see what he had on offer. Good, firm
mover and when stood never stood wrong. Best Puppy and Reserve CC
2nd Green's Bernsego Jack Vorobey At Pasturegreen (Imp). Another very nice dog of stature
but not quite the presence of winner or length of neck. Well headed with a good expression.
Good, firm mover and prespared and presented in very good order.
3rd Hughes' Waldershelf Causing Kaos.
Puppy Dog (4)
1st Miles' Orlando Bloom At Jaybiem. A very nice dog who has all the correct bodily parts to
succeed but he needs to come together on the move as today he crabbed a little which spoilt an
otherwise excellent performance. He is a delight to go over with plenty of substance, good bone
and feet. Presented in very good condition.
2nd Aze's Nathesbern Blake. At best on side gaiting, looked impressive but a touch close
going away at present, hopefully this should improve with age. All male headpiece, good
expression, enough neck. Firm body with good topline.

enquiring expression. Plenty of substance with a good rear, moved out well. Prepared and
