SOUTHERN BERNESE MOUNTAIN DOG CLUB OPEN SHOW 7th February 2016
I would like to thank the committee of the club for inviting me to judge at
such a friendly and well-run show. Thanks to my stewards, Mick Brind and Grace
Richards, for keeping the ring fairly in order and also to the exhibitors for
coming on the day and for their sportsmanship.
My main concerns of the breed exhibited were weak hocks, lack of leg length and
untidy front movement. This needs to be addressed. There was only one exhibit
with an incorrect bite and temperaments on the whole were excellent, minus a
Minor Puppy Dog (4 entries,1 absentee)
1st Westlake;s Apriori Uill Smith For Jesterbrock (imp Rus). 8 month old
puppy dog of good size and substance. Outgoing temperament. Quality head with
strong muzzle and skull developing nicely with clean markings and kind dark
eye. Good length of neck, shoulder placement OK and round, strong bone with
straight front legs. Nice tight cat-like feet. Well-ribbed, good depth of chest
and level topline. Well angulated rear. Would prefer stronger hocks and rear
movement needs to improve. He could be a touch cleaner coming towards, but had
good reach in profile. Light on his feet for a strong puppy dog; sound enough
in profile. Best Puppy Dog.
2nd Reeves’ Kyleburn Night Ultimatum. Another 8 month old puppy dog who was
overall very balanced. Skull developing nicely with nice dark eye and
broad flat skull, although a touch over-marked. Good neck, shoulder and
forechest. Level topline. OK for proportions but would prefer him a
touch stronger all round and hope he makes size – still plenty of knuckle
though. Good depth of chest, strong loin and well-rounded rump. Would prefer
stronger rear movement, however was sound and balanced in profile.
3rd Shaw’s Glanzberg Massif.
Puppy Dog (2, 1)
1st Vaughan’s Prentalu Barankello. 11 month old male coming along nicely.
Well proportioned with good length of leg and overall outline. Head developing
along the right lines, dark eye, flat skull and correct ears and set. Good
length of neck and well-placed shoulder but a touch straight in upper arm which
showed on the move. Good depth of chest, well-ribbed and level top line. Nice
firm short loin with a well rounded rump. Enough rear angles but a bit long in
rear pastern at present and would prefer more drive on the move. Balanced and
coordinated movement in profile.
Junior Dog (1)
1st Vaughan’s Prentalu Barankello.
Special Yearling Dog (6, 1)
Had a fight between type and soundness in this class and the first two placings
could have quite easily swapped places.
1st Green's Waldershelf Here Comes Erik. 22 month old male, completely out
of coat and hiding nothing. Well-proportioned and balanced. Strong masculine
head with broad skull, good colouring, dark almond shaped eye and strong
muzzle. Attentive with correct ear set. Good neck, shoulder OK and straight front
with nice tight feet. Enough bone for size. Well ribbed with level topline and firm
loin. Looking his age and needs to drop all-round and mature. Would prefer more
angles both fore and aft. However what angles he has he uses to advantage, really
driving from the rear and using his back end. Clean in front and active, balanced
movement in profile. By far the soundest in this class and has great potential.
2nd Miles’ Orlando Bloom At Jaybiem JW. Upstanding male who is really
coming on. Lovely type. Quality head and expression with kind eye, strong
muzzle and broad flat skull. A touch stuffy in neck and would prefer better
shoulder placement. Straight front with strong round bone and nice tight feet.
Good depth of chest and well ribbed. Very compact. Well rounded rump and
angulated rear with well let down hocks. When he first walked in I thought he
was my winner, but lacked scope and extension on the move today and although
sound enough he could be cleaner both coming and going. Still sounder than
many here today and of beautiful type.
3rd Rothery’s Glamrock Graffiti Artist.
Maiden Dog (1)
1st Vaughan’s Prentalu Barankello.
Graduate Dog (1)
1st Vaychkus’ Flintas Kalnu Suo (imp Lith). Good length of leg and proportions.
Attractive head and expression with dark eye and good strength of muzzle. A
touch upright in shoulder for me, straight front and nice tight feet. Enough
bone for size. Good depth of chest, well ribbed, compact with short loin. Level
topline. Adequate angles behind, but a touch long in the hock. Movement
balanced and OK in profile but lacked extension and could be cleaner fore and
aft. Well-marked with rich colouring.
Post Graduate Dog (4)
Very mixed class.
1st Leek’s Harvestbank Fernando. Male of good proportions and balanced
overall shape which won him this class. Typical expression with broad skull,
strong muzzle and kind dark eye. Enough bone for size but needs to thicken
through and mature. Good depth of chest, well ribbed and firm loin leading into
well rounded rump. Good shoulder placement and enough angles to rear. Would
prefer stronger rear movement as he is a bit long in rear pastern and again
would prefer cleaner movement coming towards. However, balanced stride in
profile and liked his overall workmanlike type.
2nd Claridge’s Bernemcourt Morning Glory. 3 year old male with clean
markings and attractive head and expression. Kind dark eye, strong muzzle and
correct skull. Good bone for size and lovely tight cat-like feet. A touch
upright in shoulder and untidy coming towards. Well ribbed, good depth of
chest and firm loin leading into well rounded rump. Would prefer him a touch
stronger all round with more leg length. Love his rear movement, really driving
from those hocks; effortless and so sound in profile.
3rd Page’s Tulipanos Berni Mr Mcenroe (imp Hun).
Limit Dog (6,1 withdrawn)
1st Hyland’s Charmsway Adventurer. Quality dog. He was definitely
considered for top honours. Good bone for size and nice overall type. Strong
flat, broad skull with strong muzzle. Dark eye but eye rims a touch light
slightly detracting from expression. Good length of neck leading into
well placed shoulder, enough forechest. Nice straight front with good bone and
tight feet. Good depth of chest and well-ribbed. Strong body but slightly long
and would also prefer a touch more leg length. Level topline and correct croup
with well angulated rear and short hocks. This dog is as sound as a pound with
effortless movement, really using his hocks and with correct reach and clean
in front. Could watch him move all day. One to watch.
2nd Gopal’s Collansues Secret Bridges. Strong male with good bone and feet.
Quality head and kind expression. Strong skull and muzzle with clean markings.
Good length of neck, although a touch upright in shoulder for me. Straight
front legs, enough depth of chest and well ribbed with level topline and firm
loin. Would prefer better croup, tail set and more rear angles. However he is
balanced in angulation which with his leg length seems to give him good
profile movement, covering the ground easily. Sound enough coming and going; he
is at one with his handler on the move.
3rd Avery’s Lujento Morse.
Open Dog (4, 1)
1st Griffiths, Orme and Miles’ Ch Jaybiem Y’euben Chozen JW ShCM. Quality
dog. Super outline. Really great to go over and of lovely type. Gorgeous head
and expression with kind dark eye and correct skull with clean markings and
nice strong muzzle. Good neck and shoulder with nice straight front, good bone
and tight cat-like feet. Good depth of chest, strong body and short firm loin.
Balanced on the move although carries tail too high and rear movement could be
a touch stronger at times. Still effortless with good reach and following
through behind. Well handled. Reserve Best Dog.
2nd King and Bramble;s Ch Shirdees Continental JW. Typey male with an attractive
masculine head and expression. Dark eye, strong muzzle and skull. Good length
of neck leading into well-placed shoulder. Straight front, good bone and nice
tight feet. Rich colouring and well marked. Deep chest, well-ribbed and compact
in the loin. Well rounded rump, correct tail-set and well angulated rear. Would
prefer a bit more of him all-round and firmer hocks with tidier rear movement.
Balanced movement in profile with active stride and OK coming towards. At one
with his handler.
3rd Connelly’s Carabaz New Blues.
Veteran Dog (2)
1st Turner;s Ch Tangyachates Beachcomber. There is no doubt in my mind that
this is a quality dog. Strong and honest male just oozing in type. Strong masculine
head, kind dark eye with clean and attractive expression; strong muzzle and
correct broad, flat skull. Strong neck of good length, leading into well laid
shoulders and correct upper arm angulation and length. Good forechest and
straight front legs. Level topline, broad and firm body but a touch long. Good
depth of chest, well-ribbed and firm, well-muscled loin with well rounded rump.
Correct tail-set. Well angulated rear and short firm hocks which are used on
the move. Good length of leg with strong bone and nice tight feet. Rich
colouring and clean markings. Such an easy mover, so balanced in profile and
with great scope and extension. To be critical, a touch close behind but still
really uses his hocks and reaches out well in front. Strong, sound male who is
full of quality. Very pleased to award Best Dog, Best in Show, Best Veteran
2nd Rumble's Ch Glamrock Ballroom Blitz by Glenbrienz. Another nice male of
lovely type and balance. Correct proportions. Attractive expression and strong
masculine skull. Good length of neck but would prefer better shoulder and
forechest and he’s a touch narrow in front. Well proportioned and compact with
well rounded rump. Well angulated rear with well let down hocks. Moved sound
enough in profile and going away with an easy stride, sound and active for a
veteran. Rich markings. Well boned with nice tight feet.
Veteran Bitch (4)
1st Rothery’s Glamrock Future Legend. Beautiful, shapely bitch of lovely
type. Good neck and shoulder. Good depth of chest and well ribbed with nice
firm loin with well rounded rump. Compact in proportions. Well angulated rear
and well let down hocks. Would prefer more drive from the rear and had a
tendency to plait a little behind. Clean in front and balanced in profile.
Balanced bitch. Shame she did not make her title.
2nd Sutton’s Ch Bernsteph J’adore Dior. This bitch walked in and I smiled
as I have always admired her soundness. 10 years old now, my heart sank as age
is finally getting to her which affected her movement greatly. Head could be
stronger and more attractive in expression. Good length of neck, well placed
shoulders and good return of upper arm. Straight front, enough bone for size
and tight feet. Good depth of chest, well ribbed, level topline and
well rounded rump. Well-angulated rear and short hocks. A touch uncoordinated
on the move today and struggled to get around the ring. Still today her quality
and shape could not be denied.
3rd Blake’s Tangyachates Young Dream At Brenador.
Minor Puppy Bitch (4)
1st Vaychkus’ Blue Aira Bernenskie Ranczo (imp Pol). Lovely 8 month old puppy
bitch who had a very easy day to gain Best Puppy in Show. Good proportions and
should make a nice strong bitch. Lovely type, quality head developing well with
rich markings and dark eye. Correct ears and set, strong muzzle. Touch stuffy
in neck at times and would prefer more forechest but has time for this to
develop. Shoulder OK and good length and angulation of upper arm. Straight
front legs, good bone for size and tight feet. Good depth of chest, strong core
and firm, level topline. Correct croup and rear. I loved the way this bitch
really uses her back end, driving from those hocks. Could be a touch cleaner
coming towards but balanced in profile and overall very sound on the move.
Shall watch her future with interest.
2nd Gomme’s Kyleburn Night Umbrette. Nice shapely 8 month old puppy bitch
with good conformation. Hope she will make size. Head developing nicely with
flat skull and attractive expression. Lovely angles both fore and aft. Touch
long in the body at present. Straight front and correct tight feet. Forechest
developing nicely, well-ribbed and correct croup. Balanced bitch who was sound
enough on the move.
3rd Cutler’s Kyleburn Night Usherette.
Puppy Bitch (4)
1st Wells’ Bernfold Pawpatrol Chase. Easy class win. Nice puppy bitch of
attractive type. Beautiful head and expression with dark eye and correct skull.
Good neck leading into well-placed shoulder and upper arm. Good depth of chest,
broad body but a touch longer caste at present. Good length of leg. Well rounded
rump but would prefer more rear angulation. Lacked drive and scope on the move
today, may settle once she drops into herself and rear angles improve. Easy gait
in profile. Lovely colouring with nice tight feet.
2nd Albery & Randall’s Prentalu Belassia. Strong bitch with good leg
length and easy balanced movement. A touch long in loin and would prefer her
more compact in body. Feminine head and expression. Good length of neck and
shoulder placement. Good bone for size. Flat feet. Well angulated rear. Needs
to fill her frame. However felt she had potential to become a strong and fairly
3rd Cutler’s Kyleburn Night Usherette.
Junior Bitch (3)
1st Bird’s Kernow Let it Be At Culllumbern. This bitch is really coming on.
Caught my eye as soon as she entered the ring. Lovely body, broad back and
well-ribbed. Beautiful shape and outline. Good neck and shoulder with straight
front and good bone. Would prefer a more feminine head and expression. Rich
markings. Strong body. Level topline, compact in proportions with firm loin and
correct croup. Well angulated rear and nice short rear pasterns. Could be
firmer in hock and rear movement needs to strengthen. Also a tendency to throw
her elbows out coming towards. However, she is very sound in profile with good
scope and active stride and so balanced overall. Coat gleaming and well-handled.
2nd King’s Ecalpharas Moonshine Over Leapingwell. Nice balanced bitch.
Pretty head, with nice eye and flat skull. Good neck and shoulder although a
touch short in upper-arm and would prefer more forechest. Level topline,
correct croup and well angulated rear. Out of coat and needing to mature and
thicken through. Moved well going and in profile but a touch narrow towards.
Looking forward to seeing this bitch mature.
3rd King & Brambles’ Shirdees Strike A Pose.
Special Yearling Bitch (3, 1)
1st Miles’ Save Dallas Kiss For Jaybiem. Beautiful bitch. Lovely shape and
type. Considered her for the top honours. Attractive expression with nice dark
eye and strong but feminine head. Can look a touch stuffy in neck sometimes.
Shoulder placement OK. Nice straight front, good bone and feet. Firm level
topline with compact and firm loin leading into a well-rounded rump. Strong
body, deep chest and well ribbed. Well angulated rear with nice tight short
hocks. Would like her to be a touch cleaner coming towards but moved soundly
with an easy gait and used her rear. Without doubt, one to watch.
2nd McGrory’s Chippis Hug A Diamond. Nice type of a bitch. Pretty head and
expression. Good neck and shoulder, enough bone for size and tight feet. Good
depth of chest and well proportioned. Untidy coming towards and stilted
movement in rear. Nice rich tan and markings.
Maiden Bitch (8, 2)
Movement in this class had a lot to be desired.
1st Bird’s Kernow Let it Be At Cullumbern.
2nd Bamford’s Prentalu Ain. Balanced feminine bitch of good shape and
proportions. Pretty head and expression. Flat skull and broad muzzle. Good neck
and shoulder although a touch untidy coming towards. Good depth of chest and
well angulated rear. Nice firm rump and correct tail set. Balanced movement in

Novice Bitch (6)
1st Bird’s Kernow Let it Be At Cullumbern.
2nd Webb’s Floskirk Beach Baby At Swissbears. Nice type of a bitch. Pretty
head and expression. Well angulated with good neck, shoulder and correct
fore-arm. Would prefer her more compact. Good depth of chest and well-boned.
Would prefer tighter movement coming and going but moved well in profile.
Correct croup and well angulated rear.
3rd Jakobsen’s Bernfold Celeb Annabel.
Graduate Bitch (4)
1st Flanagan’s Collansues Sugar N Spice. Easy class win. Beautiful shapely
bitch with good neck and shoulder. Would prefer more length and angle to
upper arm. Lovely rump and rear angles. Well-ribbed but need to take care as
can look a touch longer caste and a tendency to drop her topline. Rich colouring.
Liked her overall shape and balance. Very sound in profile movement with scope
and sound enough coming and going. Will be interested to see what she looks
like when she matures and comes together.
2nd Blake’s Brenodor The Wonder Of You. Nice type of a bitch with good leg
length and compact. Typical head type with kind dark eye but a touch lacking in
underjaw. Stuffy in neck and would prefer better shoulder placement. Good depth
of chest, level topline, firm loin and correct croup. Good bone for size. Moved
3rd Eaves’ Bernemcourt Acquiesce At Kyleburn.
Post Graduate Bitch (10, 3, 1 withdrawn)
1st Wills’ Kernow Moondust. Gorgeous bitch oozing in type. Beautiful shape
and outline. Pretty head with strong but feminine skull with a nice kind dark
eye and rich, clean markings. Good neck and shoulder although I would prefer a
touch more forechest. Good depth of chest and well-ribbed. Level topline and
compact body with firm loin and well-rounded rump. Well angulated rear with
strong short hocks. Well-muscled. Her handler really needs to get a grip of this
bitch as they both nearly lost it; however I just loved her and the quality, type and
soundness was obvious. So sound on the move, really using her rear, balanced
in profile and clean in front. Good bone for size and nice tight feet. Very pleased
to award Best Bitch and Reserve Best in Show.
2nd Stannard’s Kohbern Swans Of Samui. Nice shapely bitch with balanced
movement and coming along nicely. Head developing, flat skull and dark eye.
Correct ear shape. Would prefer better shoulder placement and a touch more
neck. Still enough forechest and correct length and angle of upper arm. Good
depth of chest, well-ribbed, firm loin and well-rounded rump. Enough bone for
size. Feet could be tighter. Correct proportions and strong core and topline.
Loved her sound movement. Should mature nicely. Well handled.
3rd Reeves’ Charmsway Apple Of My Eye.
Limit Bitch (3)
1st Flanagan’s Collansues Mountain Angel. This bitch moved effortlessly
around the ring with good reach and drive. A bit overdone in skull for me and
would prefer a more feminine expression. Lovely rich colouring with jet black
coat. Good neck length leading into well placed shoulder and correct upper arm.
Nice straight front and tight feet. Strong body. Good depth of chest and well
ribbed. Looked a touch longer caste at times. Lovely bum and well angulated
rear with nice short hocks, which she really used on the move. Clean coming
2nd Flippance’s Bernbienaime Bright Button At Nenebern. Nice shapely,
feminine bitch with lovely proportions. Pretty head and expression with dark
eye, flat skull and clean markings. Looked a bit matronly today, a touch heavy
over her shoulders and was lazy on the move which cost her the class. Good
neck and shoulder. Straight front legs, enough bone for size but would prefer
better feet. Good depth of chest, well-ribbed, firm loin and well-rounded rump.
Good rear angles and firm hocks. Overall very balanced.
3rd King & Bramble’s Shirdees Shelby.
Open Bitch (6)
1st Griffiths, Slade & Orme’s Jaybiem Voo Doo At Potterspride JW. As
sound as a pound. Nice dark eye, strong muzzle and flat skull. Beautifully made
with good length of neck, well-laid shoulder and cracking forechest. Nice
straight front, well boned for size and nice tight feet. Would prefer more of
her all round with a touch more leg length. Strong body, good depth of chest
with short, firm loin and lovely rump. Well angulated rear and firm tight hocks.
Rich colouring. Loved how she really uses her rear, has scope in profile and
reaches out well in front. Clean movement coming and going. So balanced in
angulation, in beautiful condition, well-presented and handled. Pleased to
award her Reserve Best Bitch.
2nd Goodyear’s Harvestbank Fields Of Gold JW. Nice strong bitch with rich
colouring and of lovely type; she pushed the winner hard. Strong muzzle and
broad flat skull with kind dark eye and the typical Bernese smile. Attractive
expression. Good length of neck leading into well-laid shoulder. Straight front
standing and with good length of leg. A touch heavy today which affected her
topline both standing and on the move. Good bone for size and nice tight feet.
Good depth of chest and broad in the body. Would prefer her more compact and
with cleaner front movement. Lovely bum and well angulated rear. Really love
the way this bitch uses her hocks and has super reach and drive in profile
which seemed so elastic and easy.
3rd Greens’ Waldershelf All About Edna.
Breeders Bitch (5, 1)
1st Flanagan’s Collansues Precious Dream. Overall an honest bitch of
beautiful type with a pretty head and expression. Clean symmetrical markings
and nice strong muzzle. Good length of neck leading into well placed shoulder.
Good length of leg, body needs to drop as she matures. Broad body but a touch
longer caste. Well-rounded rump and balanced rear angulation. Attractive
colouring and an overall look of quality. Has a tendency to pace. When she does
move she moves soundly from all angles.
2nd Stelmach & Davis’ Chippis She’s A Diamond. Pretty head and expression
with nice kind dark eye. Nice to go over with good neck, shoulder and correct
angle and length of upper arm but untidy when coming towards. Good depth of
chest and well-ribbed with broad back and firm level topline. Would prefer more
length of leg, however she is compact in the loin and has a well-rounded rump.
Good rear angulation and really uses her hocks.
3rd Williams’ Tinland Nia Perfect.
1st Stelmach & Davis. More consistent for type, shape and movement, at one
2nd Gurnee. Two nice dogs in their own right of different proportions and
