LICHFIELD CS OPEN SHOW 27th January 2018

Thank you to the society for inviting me to judge Bernese Mountain Dogs at your Open show. I had a lovely large ring which enabled this large working breed plenty of space to move out well. Thank you to my stewards and the exhibitors who supported me on my first judging appointment.

Puppy Dog or Bitch  (4 entries, 2 absentees)

1st Miles’ Littlehidden Jyme Spicez At Jaybiem.  A 6 month old puppy dog who is a raw baby at this stage. Standing he shows good proportions and has good bone and size for his age. His pleasing head is developing and he has a good muzzle, stop and flat skull. His dark almond shaped eyes, classic markings and fluffy puppy ears give him a melting expression. He has straight front legs, good angles front and back but his hocks are a touch long at the moment. He held his topline well whilst standing and whilst on the move. When he settled he moved well for his age. He had a happy, friendly temperament and was enjoying his day. Overall he still needs lots of time to mature and develop but is showing promise. Best Puppy and Reserve Best of Breed.

2nd Wood’s Cegshes Cadmus.  A handsome 8 month old male puppy who is maturing well. Standing he shows good proportions and has good bone and substance. His head is developing well with strong muzzle and good width for age. I would prefer some more length of neck, but it flowed onto strong shoulders, straight front legs and compact feet. Good length of shoulder but would prefer some more length to his upper arm. Well sprung ribs for age and short loin. At times stifles appeared a little straight but these move onto strong, well let down hocks. Good tail set. Lovely thick coat with classic markings. Unfortunately something had unsettled this boy today which affected his posture on the stand and his movement.

Junior Dog or Bitch  (2, 2)

Post Graduate Dog or Bitch  (1,1)

Open Dog or Bitch  (2,1)

1st Miles’ Jaybiem Burli Shassi JW.  A beautiful bitch who has just turned 2 years old. She shows lovely breed type and has strong bone and substance. Pretty, feminine head with dark, almond shaped eyes, strong muzzle, defined stop and flat skull, decorated with gorgeous dark markings, rich tan and a kind expression. Lovely thick coat with classic markings. Excellent outline and displayed good 9:10 proportions. Well angulated front and back, straight front legs, good bend of stifle and strong, well let down hocks. Good tail set and carriage, and straight topline which she maintained on the move. Beautiful, sound movement in all directions. Pleased to award her Best of Breed and it was great to watch her gain Working Group 4.

Thank you the Society for the invitation to judge Bernese at this prestigious show. Thanks alsotomy stewards Jean Hayand JoyceSetterfield for organising the paperwork; I think we worked very well together so thank you ladies.

I was delighted with my entry a total of 95 entries. There were 28 absentees. The one downside to the day was the size of the ring which contained two large pillars and made assessing movement virtually impossible. I was delighted with my main winners and very happy to learn that my Best of Breed made up on the day. My Best Puppy, the female, went on to win the Working Puppy Group. Congratulations to all the owners/breeders etc.,

My overall impression is that there isstill a need to look at proportions, especially length of body as there were many long dogs in evidence, the length being through the loin. Ideally we should be selecting for correct proportions of 9 to 10. I found no problems in the main with mouths. Some exhibits moved so close going away it was impossible to assess their movement. There was also evidence of gay tails which can detract. Presentation overall was very good with only a few “grubby” dogs. Thanks to the exhibitors for bringing their dogs for my approval. There was a lovely atmosphere ringside and I had a great day, made extra special by judging some lovely dogs.
