Bernese News 6th January 2015

I'd like to start the New Year off by thanking all of you who sent us Christmas cards; we
received well over 200 this year, many with photos of dogs and Bernese in particular which is
always a massive bonus plus thanks too for all the messages and telephone calls which were
all very much appreciated by both Brian and I.

I hope you all enjoyed some quality time with your dogs over the festive break but during the
four days after the 25th I was contacted by three distraught owners who had Bernese develop
bloat and torsion during the holiday - sadly two succumbed but one has pulled through.

There are many factors which may contribute toward an episode of canine volvulus but a change
of normal routine coupled with excitement, stress or heightened activity seems to be a particularly
high-risk combination for our breed.  One of the grieving owners I spoke to hadn't realised that
feeding all the fatty skin and waste from their turkey could prompt a digestive incident - but it did
and that seemed to be the cause of the emergency.  Such a shame.

Some of you have mentioned that you would like to see more results from Open shows here -
well, of course you can if you let me have the results and anything else you would like to be included
in this resource.

If sending/texting show results please don't forget to state which show it is and who the judge was too.

Looking through the current Radio Times
I saw promotion for a documentary you may be
interested in which will be screened on BBC2  at 8pm tonight and tomorrow night,
Tuesday 6th and Wednesday 7th January.

SIX PUPPIES AND US is described thus;
"If you own a dog yourself you may spend half of this programme rolling your eyes in
exasperation or howling with fury.  Most of the six new puppy owners are simply naive and
have romantic notions about what having a dog will be like.  They also haven't a clue how to
deal with normal situations let alone bad habits.  You can't blame the dog for misbehaving if
you think training just means repeatedly telling them "no".  This canine reality check may
be a bit late for people who have rashly bought a dog for Christmas but it could help a bit,
and the six puppies are unbearably cute."

It continues;

"There are insights aplenty into puppy development in this series following six young
canines and their new owners over the course of their first tumultuous year together.
There's Ralph, a beautiful gun dog who's made the fluffy living room rug his toilet;
Stan, a gentle giant rescue dog with a phobia of a particular country lane;  playful Lola;
a tiny yorkie cross Stevie who thinks he's a big dog and stalks the neighbourhood;
working border collie Jess; and finally Byron, who is nipping away at his new family."

If the description is accurate many breeders will, regrettably, be saddened by and all too
familiar with the content!
