Bernese News 23rd January 2018

Karen Bird, secretary of the BMD Club of Great Britain emailed;

"With deepest apologies to all our members we have to announce that we have to change the date of the Spring Garden Party for this year.

"As you can imagine after one change already this decision has not been made lightly but the Garden Party will now be held on it's original date of Sunday April 29th.

"The venue is unaffected and will be Priors Marston Sports Club as usual. We hope all our regulars can join us for this event and hope to see a few new faces as well for a great Bernese day out.

"More details will follow when available."

Janet Riseborough emailed;

"There are two extra Kennel Club classes at WELKS this year. Special Beginners Dog & Special Beginners Bitch.  The winner of these two classes going forward to the KC Sponsored Group: Best in Working Group Special Beginners.  The criteria for these classes are for owner, handler  or exhibit never having won a Challenge Certificate or a Res. Challenge Certificate. The winner of these classes can challenge for the CC.as long as it has not been beaten in another breed class.   For any more information on these new breed classes exhibitors can check on the Kennel Club site:  Special Beginners Competition FAQs.The KC are hoping that this will give up & coming handlers & dogs the opportunity & experience of going into a group.  Also if entries are made before the 7th February 2018 they will be at a less entry fee.  These classes are on trial for two years so it depends on entries for these new classes. Lots of new exhibitors do not know about these classes or what they mean."

Janet is the scheduled judge for WELKS 2018.

Boston is the first General Championship Show of the year and although there were no CCs for Bernese there were 8 scheduled classes

Judge Paula Reynolds-Frost who drew 26 entries with 9 absentees and withheld both awards from the Post Graduate Bitch class. I gather there was some particularly lively discussion and banter around the ringside.

Best Dog and Best of Breed went to the Open Dog class winner Karen Bird & Shandy Bridges' Ch Kernow Something who was bred by Shandy with Reserve Best Dog going to Post Graduate Dog class winner June Miles' homebred Jaybiem Stan Innovation. June's Save Dallas Kiss For Jaybiem bred by Caroline Rush won Open Bitch and Best Bitch.

Karen Bird and Heather Head's Cullumbern Roman Toga With Millermead (bred by Karen) who won Junior Bitch and took Reserve Best Bitch.

Best Puppy went to Carole Hartley-Mair's homebred Meadowpark Touch Of Class. Congratulations.

I received my copy of the  "World of Bernese Mountain Dogs in 2014, 2015 and 2016" and what a large, heavy and impressive book it is.  Definitely a hernia risk for postmen!

Published in the Netherlands by BB Press, it is an English language book containing 352 pages in an A4 size format which is a hefty one inch thick (2 1/2cm) and packed with full colour photographs and information about Bernese in 28 different countries including the UK.

There are lists and details of Bernese Champions and top winners, lots of pedigrees, a few adverts and some articles making it a very interesting and valuable reference which is sure to keep even the most avid enthusiast engrossed during these dark winter evenings.  A considered purchase at €64.50 plus shipping but it is a great addition to your bookshelf that those interested in breeding and showing will dip into time and time again.  Volume one in this series sold out quickly but has now been republished and is available to purchase. The World of Bernese Mountain Dogs in 2011, 2012 and 2013 is in the same format, 252 pages of information and photos covering 20 countries including the UK and priced at 59.50 plus shipping.  Serious enthusiasts will enjoy these reference books immensely.

Order from the publishers website www.bbpress.nl/bernese-mountain-dogs

and payment can be made to them easily from the UK via bank transfer or Paypal.  Volume three which will reference 2017 - 2019 will be published in 2020.

Combinations of freezing cold temperatures and biting winds, snow, sleet and rain were encountered by many of those travelling to and from Manchester Championship Show last weekend for the first set of CCs on offer for this year. The weather made for very muddy conditions in the car park resulting on some exhibitors needing to be towed out of the mire by tractor.

Breed specialist judge Joanne Sutton had 95 entries with 28 absentees across 14 classes.  I hear that many of those present were disappointed to be allotted such a small, cramped ring which also contained pillar obstacles and so making it extremely restrictive and nigh-on impossible to move the dogs to their best advantage.

Collecting his third CC plus Best of Breed was Jackie Green's Canadian Import Alpenspirit Pure Pleasure For Arvella. Jackie was also delighted that her Netherlands import Joseph Vom Durrbachler Wald At Arvella who is jointly owned with Rebecca King won Junior Dog thus achieving the final points needed to claim his Junior Warrant Certificate (subject to KC confirmation). The Reserve Dog CC was won by Julie Baldwin's Swedish import Ch Tjofselinas Z Diamuz At Fortonpark JW. Five years old, he was bred by Lotta Schander and sired by Marroussia Zante Zhivago x Kronblommas Jolanta.

In Bitches it was an 8th CC for Di and Mike Atherton's homebred, 5 1/2 year old Ch Athersbern Peronelle Blush who is a daughter of Ch Monalou Dutch Courage x Athersbern Affinity. The Reserve Bitch CC was awarded to June Miles' homebred Jaybiem Burli Shassi JW. Just 2 years old, she is by Jaybiem Y'euben Chozen JW ShCM x Ch Meadowpark Sweetest Thing At Jaybiem.   Carole Hartley-Mair's homebred Meadowpark Touch Of Class took the Best Puppy award. 6 months old and sired by Ch Meadowpark High Class x Ch Meadowpark Breezing On, she then went on to win the Working Puppy Group under Mr C Mackay. Congratulations.

And so we have another new Bernese Champion, subject to Kennel Club confirmation.

As far as I can ascertain, we have ended 2017 with two Championship show critiques outstanding; LKA judged by Jeff Luscott only took place a few weeks ago so the critique isn't yet overdue  but I have been unable to find the critiques for Windsor judged by Dr Ron James.

If anyone has seen the Windsor critique published anywhere would you please be so kind as to direct me to it.
