WELKS CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW 24th April 2015
Many thanks to the committee for inviting me to judge at this well run show and to my stewards
for keeping things running smoothly. My apologies to the exhibitors for the brevity in parts of
this report but my notes were decimated by a heavy shower and became almost unreadable.
Generally I found a wide variation in type, size, presentation and handling but temperaments,
on the whole, were excellent.
One very nice bitch would not co-operate and refused to be examined despite several attempts,
a very great pity.
I was very pleased with my main winners.
Minor Puppy Dog (2 entries)
1st Ratcliffe & Harrison’s Monalou Axelmeister. A promising, confident 7 month old puppy
of excellent proportions. Nice head developing with correct ratio skull to muzzle. Eye could be
a touch darker. Well boned and moved out confidently. Very happy character.
2nd Weatherer’s Graburlynn Snap Dragon With Itsuitzuz. 8 months old with a larger frame
to fill and so looked rather rangy. Lovely deep rich colouring but coat curly at present, acceptable
in a baby. Head of good proportions. Moved OK.
Puppy Dog (1)
1st Game’s Chippis Magic Diamond. A small framed male of 8 months enjoying his day out
and going well for his handler.
Junior Dog (5 entries, 2 absentees)
1st Green’s Waldershelf Here Comes Erik. A very well schooled, confident youngster - a credit
to his handler. Just out of puppy and looking a little raw at this stage. Head still developing but a
little over deep in the muzzle at present. Shows on a loose lead and four square on straight legs
and tidy feet but I would prefer more angulation throughout. Excellent topline held on the move.
Eye-catching mover covering the ground with a free, effortless, gait.
2nd Romanov’s Waldershelf Fancy Phoenix. An unruly youngster who gave his handler a
very hard time. Litter mate to 1st and of similar proportions. A little more finished in the head
but also looking a typical junior male at this stage which is no bad thing in a slow maturing breed.
Went better with a different handler and moved out well.
Post Graduate Dog (10, 1)
1st Green’s Alpenspirit Pure Pleasure For Arvella (Can Imp). This 2 year old male has the
most appealing head and expression. His skull is broad and flat with good ear set. Very good
proportions, nicely balanced throughout with level topline, he moved out soundly powered by
his strong hindquarters but just not looking on top form today. A very promising young dog.
2nd Round’s Collansues Black Magic. Good sized 3 year old male with strong head piece
and dark eye. He is still maturing & will need time to fully fill his frame. Movement is a little
erratic especially on the front when coming towards. Nice confident temperament.
Limit Dog (3, 1)
1st King & Bramble's Shirdees Continental JW ShCM. A nearly 3 year old, workmanlike
but stylish boy with excellent head and expression. Very well proportioned with level topline
and good angles throughout. Nicely rounded croup with good turn of stifle, well set tail and
short sturdy rear pasterns. A very tidy mover who goes well for his handler. Reserve CC.
2nd Griffiths, Orme & Miles' Jaybiem Y’euben Chozen JW. An all together different type
to 1st but nonetheless he also has an appealing head and expression. Commendable bone.
At 3 years old he is maturing nicely into his large frame. Moves with reach and drive but his
insistence on flying his tail spoils the outline.
Open Dog (4, 2)
1st Mair, Hartley-Mair & Dybdall’s Meadowpark Vertigo JW.
What a dog this is from this already exceptional kennel. I had the pleasure of jointly awarding
this 20 month old male Best Puppy in Show when he was just 6 months old. He wowed me
then and he did not disappoint me today. He has a well shaped head, all male with kind
appealing expression, flat skull and correct ear set. A good length of neck leading into well
laid shoulders, good spring of rib, correct depth of chest, level topline, excellent rear angles
and well carried tail. Calm and confident in character. He moves effortlessly with an easy
action covering the ground well. Handled to get the best from him which, added to the
immaculate presentation, completes an already very impressive picture. Dog CC and Best
of Breed (Working Group 4).
2nd Bird’s Ch Shirdees Love Me Do At Cullumbern JW ShCM. A fully mature 6 year old
dog of admirable breed type. Lovely head with appealing expression. Well boned and good
angulation throughout. Looking a little heavy today and this had a detrimental effect on his
Good Citizen Dog (1)
1st Owen’s Vellbern The Rainmaker. A 2 year old male of good sensible temperament
going well for his handler. Medium size with good overall balance and adequate bone for
Minor Puppy Bitch (5, 1)
1st Sayer’s Tickbern Takin Liberties At Takodabern. A very pretty, shapely baby of 7
months. Lovely balanced head developing, nice flat skull with correct ear set. Well
proportioned body and shapely outline. Moved out well for her young handler once she
settled and stopped pacing. Best Puppy in Breed.
2nd Johnson’s Monalou Bay Breeze. Totally different in type to 1st. head shape still
developing but slightly domed in the skull at present. Shapely outline but watch her weight,
good bone and lovely cat like feet. Steady and confident on the move.
Puppy Bitch No entries
Junior Bitch (8, 4)
1st Weston’s Bernfawr In Vogue. Feminine 13 month old bitch with pretty head and dark
but slightly round eye. Shapely outline with good angles throughout & level topline held on
the move. Good colouration with rich tan. Tidy little mover.
2nd Hundley’s Bernfawr Imagination At Calizley. Litter sister to 1st and very similar.
I was splitting hairs between the two really - sweet head and expression. Enough bone for
size. Again, shapely well proportioned outline. Moved well.
Novice Bitch (1)
1st Westlake’s Alpine Joy Page At Jesterbrock (Imp Rus). Nearly 2 years old looking a
little tall and rangy today due to lack of coat. feminine head. Nice outline but will need time
to mature and fulfill her potential.
Post Graduate Bitch (12, 4)
1st Mair, Hartley-Mair & Dybdall’s Meadowpark Breezing On. A good sized 15 month old
bitch of good proportions. Balanced throughout. Good head shape and expression with clear
white markings but lacking in pigmentation around the mouth. Level topline with broad,
nicely rounded, croup. Moved well.
2nd Trevett’s Vellbern The Raindancer. A different type to 1st but again, a bitch of good
size and harmonious proportions. 2 years old with pleasing head and expression. Not quite
so tidy on the move as the winner.
Limit Bitch (8, 4)
1st Edge’s Monalou Iced Queen. A pleasing 4 year old bitch who appeals on shape,
type and movement. Shapely outline with good angulation fore and aft. Nice head and
expression although her muzzle could be a touch broader. Lovely rich colouring. Covers the
ground well on the move with excellent side extension. Reserve CC.
2nd King & Bramble’s Shirdees Chevolet. Another bitch with pleasing overall shape.
Well proportioned body with good angulation to the rear. Moves steadily, she just lacks a
bit of enthusiasm.
Open Bitch (7, 2)
1st Gurney’s Monalou Fanny Craddock JW. Substantial 3 1/2 year old bitch with the most
appealing head and expression. broad and flat in the back skull with lovely dark eye and well
proportioned muzzle. Balanced throughout with excellent bone, lovely tight round feet, good
angulation and short, sturdy rear pasterns. Immaculately turned out as always from this owner,
she was shown in great condition and coat despite recently rearing a litter. She moved out
well and I was happy to award her the Bitch CC (her 3rd). I am surprised that this lovely girl
hasn’t been made up before.
2nd Richards’ Tickbern Naughty But Nice Von Richenbern. A very feminine girl with a
very attractive head and expression. Appealing dark, well shaped eyes. Presents a
balanced outline with level topline and good tail carriage. A good size girl but I would prefer
a little more bone. Moved well.
Good Citizen Bitch (3)
1st Williams’ Tickbern Oaklahoma In Tinland. Pretty, feminine girl of good outline and
moved well. She is well angled throughout but could be heavier in bone.
2nd Flanagan’s Collansues Heart Of Gold. A 3 year old bigger framed bitch. Balanced
outline and moved well. A little fine through the muzzle which could be broader.
