BMD CLUB OF GREAT BRITAIN CHAMPION SHIP SHOW 22nd September 2018

Dog Classes

I would like to thank the Committee of the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of Great Britain for their kind invitation to judge at this Championship Show and, most importantly, I would like to thank all the exhibitors for giving me their entry and allowing me the pleasure of judging their dogs.

I would also like to express my thanks to my Ring Stewards, Wendy Smee and Michelle Colman, who made my day run so smoothly and to the ‘Show Team’ who provided such excellent hospitality.

I found the quality of the dogs, generally, to be of good standard and with the exception of a couple of classes my placings were easily filled. Temperaments were also good and although some of my youngsters were rather playful all bar one stood firmly for assessment. Presentation of the dogs was excellent with only a couple of exhibits not well groomed. The majority of exhibits were well handled but a couple of dogs would definitely have been higher placed had they been a little better ‘schooled’. I think it unfortunate that in the outside ring there was something of great interest to ‘The Boys’ which may well have caused some erratic movement and this did affect placings.

Although dentition was generally good with no over or undershot mouths there appeared to be more level bites than I remembered from previous appointments. Our Illustrated Breed Standard says that a complete scissor bite is the ideal but a level bite should be tolerated. I mention this purely on the number of exhibits that displayed this particular characteristic.

In my line up of unbeaten dogs I found it interesting that three of the four dogs in serious contention for top honours were sired by the same dog, Ch Meadowpark Vertigo.

My Challenge Certificate winner is an impressive example of our breed demonstrating all the qualities a Bernese Mountain Dog should possess, strong and sturdy, active and alert with excellent bone and effortless movement. Together with John Jacobsen we were pleased to award him Best in Show. We were also pleased to award his son Best Puppy in Show.

A baby puppy, six months and one week of age who thoroughly enjoyed himself. Good head and expression with dark almond shaped eye. Rich dark tan. Good length of leg, a little short in upper arm but with a level topline and nicely rounded rump. Good tail set and of correct length. Moved well for age.

Good front with broad chest, well laid back shoulders and good angulation to the rear. Lovely short rear pasterns. Nice tight feet. Moved well.

Mid Limit Dog  (8, 2)
A close decision between 1st and 2nd. I preferred the compact and balanced body of 1st and the movement of 2nd. As I think that the 9:10 ratio, which our breed standard states, is of critical importance I made the decision to award as follows:

Good depth of chest with well laid back shoulders, level topline and good spring of rib. Nicely rounded rump, well bent stifles, short rear pasterns. Nice tight feet. Moved well.

Excellent shoulder placement, level topline, good spring of rib, nicely rounded rump giving good rear angulation. Short hocks. Moved well and with drive. Reserve CC.

Excellent rapport with handler. Not in full coat but this could not detract from his overall quality. CC and Best in Show.

2nd Baldwin's Ch Guiness Record From Christofland To Fortonpark (Imp Cze).
A well balanced male of good type. Good head with gentle expression, dark eye and good ear set. Excellent front assembly with correct length of upper arm.
