Bernese News 6th September 2018

Julie Ann Wright very kindly sent me this photo of the winners of the "Carting end of season awards". I believe the presentations were made at the BMD Club of Great Britain Autumn Garden Party held at Priors Marston on Sunday.

From left;
Best Overall Beginner - Di Crawshaw with Torin
Top Working Cart Dog Gold - Bruce Hellingsworth with Tolly
Working Cart Dog Silver - Belle Owen with Bollinger
Working Cart Dog Bronze - Chris Handley with Norman
Best Overall Intermediate - Julie Ann Wright with Farmer

I understand the October 2018 issue of Dogs Monthly, due out on 6th September, contains an article about Bernese carting in the UK so worth looking out for.

BMD CLUB OF SCOTLAND CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW 4th August 2018

Bitch classes

Many thanks to the BMD Club of Scotland for their kind invitation to judge, it was an honour to give out my first CCs on home soil.

I would also like to thank my steward John McNulty for his excellent organisation in the ring and to all the exhibitors for their support and providing me with such a quality entry of well presented dogs. Temperaments overall were good and in the more senior classes quality was excellent.

BMD CLUB OF WALES OPEN SHOW 28th July 2018

I was delighted with both my entry and my welcome at the BMD Club of Wales. A delightful well run day filled with bara brith, fabulous temperaments and an atmosphere that both the exhibitors and committee should be very proud of.

The BMD is a working dog and should be fit and well muscled, some exhibits were carrying too much weight which affected movement and will, in time, affect overall health. Pleased to see that handlers moved dogs at the correct pace.

Veteran Dog No entries

Minor Puppy Dog No entries

Puppy Dog No entries

Junior Dog (2 entries, 2 absentees)

Special Yearling Dog (1, 1)

Post Graduate Dog (2)
1st Perks’ Kernow Festival Buzz.
Reserve Best Dog. Very pleasing head with strong, flat skull. Well presented. Would prefer less upright shoulder but better on the move in profile than coming to and going away. Good croup and nice compact feet.
2nd Bateman’s Funatic Definitely Maybe About Santala (Imp). Well muscled and preferred shoulder to that of 1st but closer behind than I would prefer and carrying a little bit too much weight. Head less flashy but still appealed.

Limit Dog (4, 1)
1st Perks’ Kernow Festival Buzz.
2nd Fairclough’s Monalou Spirit Of Discovery ShCM.
Slightly longer than 1st. Masculine head and not moved to full advantage.
3rd Ratcliffe’s Welshbern Seven Seas Of Rhye At Tribern ShCM. Longer in loin than I would prefer, profile movement is excellent but unfortunately lacked the muscle and condition of the two ahead of him.

Open Dog (3, 1)
1st Bird’s Ch. Kernow Something ShCM.
Best Dog and Reserve Best in Show. Balanced and well turned out. Tidy feet and good in profile. Adequate coming to and going away. Nice croup and in good condition. Heavily coated.
2nd Round’s Ch Collansues Black Magic. Balanced and good turn of stifle, would prefer better pasterns as slight weakness here.

Veteran Bitch (2, 2)

Minor Puppy Bitch (2, 1)
1st Ball’s Santala Aventurine. Best Puppy Bitch and Best Puppy in Show.
Well proportioned, pretty head and still very immature but good puppy muscle. Very much puppy movement on the out and back but still has plenty of time. Handler is a novice but is very much at one with her dog.

Puppy Bitch No entries

Junior Bitch (1, 1)

Special Yearling Bitch (3)
1st Bird & Head’s Cullumbern Roman Toga With Millermead JW.
Balanced and in proportion, well muscled, still a little growing to do, covered ground well. Pleasing head and tidy feet, OK on the out and back.
2nd Morgan’s Judabern Betty Blue. Developing nicely but rear not its fortune, lacking coat at the moment but nicely constructed.
3rd Baker’s Bernfawr Just My Luck. Moved well in profile, pleasing head, showing a little haw in eyes but head still growing. Would prefer a bit more substance, movement on out and back lost this bitch to 3rd place.

Post Graduate Bitch (7, 3)
1st Morgan’s Judabern Betty Blue.
2nd Baker’s Bernfawr Just My Luck.
3rd Baker’s Tinland Molly Malone.
Would prefer more condition as losing top-line but has balance. Didn’t move or handle as well as it could have.
Res Perks’ Bernfawr Hot Spice. Just a bit too much all over at the moment as carrying too much weight.

Limit Bitch (8, 2)
1st Miles’ Jaybiem Burli Shassi JW. Best Bitch and Best in Show.
Feminine head and well balanced, good bone. Moved beautifully both out and back and in profile, well muscled and stood 4 square. Challenged hard for Best Bitch and Best in Show.
2nd Jones’ Lujento L’wren Bacall With Welshbern. Well handled and in good condition. Good angulation but didn’t cover ground as well as 1st but good in profile, possible that the surface may have prevented this.
3rd Hill's Halesbern Totally Bindi Of Chyburne. Well muscled and moved well in profile. Pleasing head.

Open Bitch (3)
1st Morgan’s Welshbern Sweet Lady At Judabern. Reserve Best Bitch.
Well balanced and boned. Pretty head and covered ground beautifully in profile with excellent reach. Challenged hard for Reserve Best Bitch, will be watching her progress with interest.
2nd Hill's Halesbern Totally Bindi Of Chyburne. Heavily coated and previously seen but showing more reach than 3rd.
3rd Miles’ Jaybiem My My My JW. Should have moved better as conformation suggests this dog should have more forward reach. Well balanced.
